CASA playhouses ready for Germantown Fair raffle
Thursday, July 17, 2008 1:35 AM EDT Print this story | Email this story
Whether resting under a tree on the courthouse lawn in Bracken County, greeting patrons at a market or appearing as a miniature of its business, among playground equipment at Wal-Mart, three playhouses built to benefit the Court Appointed Special Advocates program are ready for the next leg of their journey.

The playhouses are going to the Old Reliable Germantown Fair, July 28- Aug. 2.

CASA volunteers assist children who may be part of the local court systems, whether as a child in trouble or as a guide and advocate when children are in the fringe of adult court actions. Proceeds from the raffle of the playhouses goes to assist in defraying the cost of mandatory training of CASA volunteers.

During the fair, all three playhouses will eventually be raffled with the first name drawn receiving first choice. The remaining houses will go to the remaining picks in order of the draw.

In the past, Wal-Mart's parking lot has been a stop for a group of CASA houses and a few days of ticket sales.

Inspired by the works of others, the miniature Wal-Mart playhouse was built by employees of the Maysville store.

"Donnie Mitchell and Daniel Sammons worked on the main frame of it a lot; other employees worked on it when they could because they knew it was being built for a good cause," said Sandy Pollock, Wal-Mart personnel manager. "CASA does good things."

The house displayed in Bracken County was a group effort. The building trades construction program of Maysville Community and Technical College combined forces with Brown County Construction and Trace Creek Construction to create a miniature summer cottage, complete with a porch, for some lucky winner to take home.

Another playhouse, a hunters cabin style, is temporarily in Fleming County, the third area county serviced by the CASA program.

"It is just the cutest thing. Any child would be just thrilled to have it," said Becky Anderson at Ken's NewMarket in Flemingsburg where the CASA house built by the Fleming County High School Future Farmers of America members has been stationed near the store.

"I think if a kid won it and their father was a hunter the kid would never see it," joked Marty Wallingford, CASA director. "I was really impressed with all the designs and workmanship. The house at Bracken County even has Pella double-pane storm windows in it."

Chances on the houses are $2 each. Locations of ticket sales are posted at each playhouse; tickets will also be sold during the fair.

In the past, lucky winners have taken home everything from a log cabin to a replica of the Maysville Firehouse and a pagoda, all built by volunteers and through donations of materials.

"Each year we raise about $10,000 with the CASA houses program. We very seldom have any expenses to the project at all. The tickets we sell are even paid for by the Farm Bureau agents in Mason, Fleming and Bracken County," Wallingford said.

The drawing will be Aug 2., at 7 p.m., at Germantown fairgrounds, he said.
