Maysville was well represented among the medalists in the cornhole competition at the Bluegrass State Games as two locals teamed up to take the gold and another was part of the bronze medal-winning team.

Mike McDaniel and Corky Middleton, both of Maysville, beat out a field of 79 teams to finish first in the adult division of Saturday's event at Woodland Park in Lexington. Also medaling was Terra Middleton of Maysville, who teamed up with Jerry Brown of Cynthiana to take third place.

With the popularity of the game increasing across the state, several new tournaments are beginning to pop up, and 2008 marked the first time cornhole was part of the Bluegrass State Games. McDaniel, who took up the game around four years ago when co-workers built boards and began playing on their lunch break, tries to play in as many tournaments as possible.

"We play a lot," said McDaniel. "We try to hit as many tournaments as we can."

For McDaniel, the win at the Bluegrass State Games was especially pleasing considering the level of the competition.

"There were some good games down there," McDaniel said. "It's definitely the biggest one we've been in."
