RIPLEY, Ohio -- Ripley Village Council met Tuesday night and adopted a pay scale for the Ripley Police Department.

According to discussion at the meeting, the police department has never had a pay scale for employees. Council members examined information about other village police department pay scales prior to making the motion to adopt the new scale.

Each of the eight RPD officers will begin with a different start pay depending on their position. That start pay will continue throughout a probationary period, with some probationary periods having a slight raise. At the end of that period, there will be a series of five steps which will increase officers' pay. Each of those steps is at the supervisor and police chief's discretion.

Also during Tuesday's meeting:

-- The village received a letter from Aberdeen Police Department thanking Ripley police for their quick response and help with a large riot which occurred at the Lively Lady in late July.

-- Mayor Tom Leonard thanked those who helped with the rescue of a one-passenger ultralite plane from the Ohio River Friday.

-- Solicitor Jay Cutrell gave council members a revised property maintenance to study.

-- Bill Fath thanked council for the Ohio Tobacco Festival help, saying the festival was a great success and plans for next year are to reinstate the fireman's parade.

-- Council learned trees on lower Main Street will be replaced with a more appropriate sized trees. The wrong type of trees were placed in that area and are now too tall. They will be replaced and replanted by the tree committee.
