A different year, a different outcome.

Deming senior Rex Schalch won a one-hole playoff with St. Patrick sophomore Russell Rigg to earn medalist honors in the All "A" regional golf tournament Monday at Flagg Springs Golf Course in Campbell County.

Schalch and Rigg tied with 77s. They were the only players in the field to break 80.

On the first playoff hole, the 303-yard, par-4 first, Schalch drove the green and two-putted for birdie. Rigg hit his drive about 50 yards short of the green, pitched to 12 feet, but missed his birdie attempt.

Last year, Rigg was medalist and Schalch came in second.

Both players qualified for the All "A" state tournament to be played in two weeks at Arlington Golf Course in Richmond.

St. Patrick, with a score of 360, finished third in the team standings behind Bishop Brossart (348) and Nicholas County (359). The entire Brossart team will advance to the state All "A" tournament.

LEWIS COUNTY 157, ROSE HILL 187 -- Clay Lykins of Lewis County was medalist with a 36 at Tee City Golf Course. Lewis' Isaac Bertram had a 38.

GIRLS SOCCER

MASON COUNTY 2, MONTGOMERY COUNTY 2 -- Jessica Batey's unassisted goal in the second half allowed the Lady Royals to gain a tie. Batey also assisted on Carolyn Morris' first half goals. Mason County has tied all three matches it has played this season.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Ripley boys' team finished sixth out of 23 teams Saturday in the FinishTiming.com Invitational at Wilmington College.

The Blue Jays were second among the Division II and III schools.

Cincinnati power La Salle won the meet with a total of 23 points. Cincinnati Anderson (76), Graham (102), Loveland (126) and Kings (149) finished second-fifth, respectively.

"The boys ran well on a very difficult course. We still have a lot of work to do in order to achieve our goals," said Ripley coach Jamie Wilkins.

Blue Jays senior Jordan England finished 15th out of 238 runners with a time of 17:52, and senior Jordan Schaeffer finished 46th in 18:51.

"England and Schaeffer were over a minute faster than they were last year at this time," said Wilkins. "Our top seven runners averaged 54 seconds faster per man than we did last year on this course, so I am pleased. Due to the level of difficulty, the Wilmington College course produces the slowest times that we will encounter all season. We should see substantial improvement at Hillsboro next Saturday."

Other top times for the Blue Jays: senior Mac Kelley (19:35), senior Ryan Moore (19:42), junior David Shouse (20:07) and sophomore Jacob Verne (20:24).

The Lady Jays finished 10th out of 17 teams with a score of 296. Kings (33) and Loveland (54) were first and second. Top times for the Ripley girls were sophomore Alexis Spires (24:23) and junior Sarah Bowling (24:25).
