A Maysville police officer and another driver were critically injured in an accident on Kentucky 9 late Friday, according to a witness.

The accident took place at an intersection of Kentucky 9 and the Wal-Mart Plaza near Applebee's Restaurant shortly before 9 p.m.

The witness said MPD Officer Cullen Thomas was off duty and on his way home, driving his cruiser when his patrol car collided with a minivan attempting to turn into the shopping center. Thomas was trapped in his cruiser for a short period before emergency workers could extract him from the wreckage, the witness said.

Thomas and the driver of the minivan were both airlifted for medical treatment although where was unknown.

Kentucky 9 was closed for an extended period as accident reconstructionists worked the scene.

Maysville Police Department, Mason County Sheriff, Kentucky State Police and Maysville EMS were all involved in the rescue.

No further information was available late Friday.
