Unique quilt stolen from park display

BLUE LICKS BATTLEFIELD STATE RESORT PARK -- Once hanging in the lobby area of Worthington Lodge for all to enjoy, a unique custom crazy quilt is now missing, Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park officials said.

"It has hung there forever. It was hanging between the two rest-rooms," Park Manager Stefanie Gaither said Thursday. "Someone apparently snatched it off the wall and took off with it."

Measuring 44 inches by 46 inches with a ribbon like point at the bottom, the quilt is a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork known as fiber art, Gaither said.

"It is really sad. It was put there for everyone to enjoy and now it is gone," she said. "It disgusts me someone would do such a thing."

An investigation has been conducted by Park Ranger Terry Grey, but the quilt nor its thief have been found, she said.

"As far as we can tell, it went missing Aug. 9 after 9 p.m and before 7 a.m. the next day," Gaither said.

Submitted photo of stolen quilt prior to installation at Blue Licks State Park. The back of the quilt features bright yellow flowered material with purple grapes.
Circulating a photograph of the quilt will hopefully generate some leads. The design also features a row of buttons of various sizes winding through the quilt pieces and trickling off the point at the bottom of the five sided quilt.

Park officials are more interested in recovering the quilt than prosecuting, at this point.

"We just want it back," Gaither said.

The quilt was not one of the locally made quilts included in the ongoing gallery of quilts the park has been holding this year.

"It came from the Capitol Gallery of Contemporary Art in Frankfort. It is a really distinctive design. If somebody finds it on e-Bay let me know," she said. "It was specially made. There is not another like it and it is special."

Anyone with information on the theft can contact Grey at 859-289-5507.

" what a terrible thing to do. It is a beautiful work of art. I don't understand when the theif had a chance to take it. There is always someone at the desk in the lobby. I hope they catch who did it, "

" In this day and age if it is nailed down or watched by a camera, someone is going to steal it. "

" Isn't it sad that someone would come into a place and snatch something like that off the wall... What is this world coming to, to be brave enough to grab it while the lodge was open for business. Shame on you.......... "
