Tips lead to capture of escapee in Lewis County

GARRISON -- A Lewis County man who escaped from a corrections facility in Louisville was apprehended by Lewis County law enforcement officials on Sunday.

According to Deputy Dwayne Stone of the Lewis County Sheriff's Office, Brian Jenkins, 24, was arrested without incident after a tip led officers to a home in Garrison.

"We had received numerous tips that Mr. Jenkins was in the area." Stone said. "We, along with Vanceburg Police Department responded to a tip of a sighting of Jenkins in the Apple Tree Subdivision on Saturday. Jenkins was able to elude us at that point."

According to Stone, Jenkins had been incarcerated for "robbery type offenses" when he walked away from a work release program early last week.

"He was in custody of the Bureau of Corrections. It appears he was on a work release detail and just walked away." Stone said. "We were notified of the escape and told to be on the lookout for him as he still has family in the Lewis County area."

Jenkins and Lewis County law enforcement had several near misses.

"He always seemed to be one step ahead of us." Stone said. "We talked to multiple people who indicated that Mr. Jenkins had called them for a ride or a place to sleep. All of those individuals were honest about either giving him a ride, a place to sleep, or something to eat."

Jenkins was very cooperative, Stone said.

"He said he had planned to turn himself in quickly." Stone said. "He stated he just wanted to see his kids first."

Deputy Gary Holland assisted Stone with the arrest.

Jenkins is currently housed in the Lewis County Detention Center and is facing charges of second-degree escape.

" It amazes me how quickly people use their kids for an excuse when they are in trouble. I've seen it so many times. Maybe he should have been home with his children instead of out commiting crimes. Was he thinking about them then?!?! "

" I know this man...still concider him a good friend...He loves his kids and only wanted to see them...no harm there..hang in there Brian your true friends are still here for you....for those that dont know him you have no right to judge him so harshly.... "

" He wanted to see his kids? First, let's look at the situation...if he wanted to see his kids so badly why would he commit a crime that would get him sent to jail/prison? If he followed the law he could see his kids EVERY day with no problems. It would be a regular 'love-festival' at the Jenkins' home on a daily basis. I doubt very seriously that anyone made him break the law. Throwing out the excuse that he wanted to see his kids when he knowingly broke the law isn't a valid argument. Besides this little "visitation" is going to result in a longer sentence and more time away from the kids.

I do agree that more could have been done to inform the area that an escaped prisoner could be in the region. I'm sure there were reports, but in cases like this diligence in making people aware is important. "

" Why is it that the public is hearing of this escaped convict being in the area AFTER he has been apprehended? Unless I missed this announcement on the radio or in the newspaper, this is the first I heard about it. Shouldn't the public be made aware of such things so they can be even more cautious of strangers coming to their homes or business? Same is true with break-ins, thefts, etc., we are not aware of what is happening in our own back doors. Granted, we are more cautious these days; but, it would be nice to know when something is happening so we can be on guard. "
