Alleged Comprehend embezzler arested
Thursday, August 21, 2008 2:36 PM EDT Print this story | Email this story
An employee of Comprehend, Inc. in Maysville has been arrested for allegedly embezzling funds from the agency.

Erica F. Blankenship, 28, of Foster was arrested Aug. 13 by Maysville police and has been charged with one count of theft by unlawful taking/disposition over $300 and tampering with physical evidence.

Blankenship, who had been employed with the agency since fall 2005, was terminated by Comprehend the day of her arrest, confirmed Comprehend Executive Director Dr. Pamela Vaught.

"There were some unfortunate decisions made in reference to this employee," Vaught said.

Referring to the alleged embezzlement as "an unfortunate incident," Vaught was unable to confirm how much money was supposedly taken by Blankenship, saying the agency is still trying to determine the exact amount and how long the alleged embezzling had been going on.

"It far exceeded the amount to press felony charges," Vaught said when asked if the amount was $14,000 or more.

Following her arrest, Blankenship was lodged at the Mason County Detention Center on $2,500 bond, which was posted the same day.

On Monday, Blankenship appeared in Mason District Court before Judge W. Todd Walton II. According to the court docket, Blankenship appeared without legal counsel and the Department for Public Advocacy has been appointed to represent her.

Her next court appearance before Walton was scheduled for Wednesday.

" Ms. Bishop this must be difficult for you and your family. You should continue to love your child. I do agree with tax payer's comment. Most appear to get off and especially white collar crime. "

" A man was caught stealing controlled substances, a felony. He was already on misdemeanor probation for harassing communications. He got a plea, did two to three weeks in jail and was released on shock probation. During that time, he incurred a domestic violence order, which he violated. He fled the state, committed misdeamors in another state, was found, forcibly returned to KY. After being returned, he was indicted for felony stalking in Lewis County. Twice he was brought before judges in Mason County for probation violations (on his original felony charge) twice his probation wasn't violated. This man also terrorized me in Maysville and wasn't charged because in Mason County they apparently don't understand the stalking statute . I now live in another state, thanks to the local justice system. Don't expect much from the Mason County courts is all I have to say. Let alone justice. I used to blame the police, but now I see what they have to deal with. "

" Why do people who are fortunate enough to have jobs have to steal from their employers? There are a lot of honest people out there who would love to have a job and not steal. "
