According to a spokesperson for the Maysville Police Department, the accident took place at 8:52 p.m., when Bettye Morgan, 71, of Flemingsburg, driving a 1994 Dodge Caravan, attempted to make a left turn from the highway into the Wal-Mart Plaza and turned into the path of a cruiser driven by Officer Cullen Thomas, 47, who was southbound on Kentucky 9.

Both drivers were first transported to Meadowview Regional Medical Center for treatment of their injuries and later airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

No information on their conditions was available late Saturday.

Thomas, who was off duty at the time of the accident, was trapped inside his cruiser for a short period of time after the accident, witnesses at the scene said Friday.

The highway was closed for several hours as accident reconstructionists investigated the incident.

Thomas has been with the Maysville Police Department for six years and is a 19-year veteran of law enforcement.

Morgan is an employee of Wal-Mart.

The accident remains under investigation by MPD.
