Maysville native Cheryl Hansen tapped for command
Friday, September 5, 2008 3:59 PM EDT Print this story | Email this story
Tapping into 19 years of U.S. Navy experience, Maysville native Cheryl Moss Hansen was recently named Officer in Charge of Construction for the Marine Corps Installations East.

Hanson, who graduated from Mason County High School, has traveled the world in her Navy career, including her most recent assignment in Japan, her father, Dr. Kelly Moss said.

"She was in charge of a $300 million Japanese facility improvement project," he said. "We are exceptionally proud of what she has accomplished. There are only 38 women in command in the Navy."

She used her Navy career to further her education, Moss said.

Hansen graduated from the University of Tennessee with a Bachelor of Science degree and later acquired a Masters in Business from the Naval Postgraduate School; she is also a licensed professional engineer in Oregon, Seabee Combat Warfare Officer, member of the Defense Acquisition Corps and a Navy Master Training Specialist.

She also coordinated the $10 billion Japanese Host Nation Funded construction projects, Moss said.

As commander in her new post, Hansen will be overseeing millions of dollars in construction projects at East Coast Navy facilities.

"There is another commander for the West Coast facilities," Moss said.

Traveling the globe in her job has sometimes meant leaving home and kin behind, Moss said.

Hansen is the mother of two teenage boys and married to Mark Hansen of Tennessee.

"It has given her mother (Betty Moss) and me an opportunity to spend a lot of time with our grandsons and her husband. They sometimes have lived with us for a year or more when she has been deployed elsewhere," Moss said.

The family has now been reunited and will be living in North Carolina.

"Their last home was in Gulfport, La., and their household items have been in storage since before hurricane Katrina," Moss said.

Thankfully the items were not damaged in the hurricane.

"She just began unpacking and said it looks like the unit was checked and re-packed after the storm without many problems," Moss said. "They were lucky; the place they had been living in was under water after Katrina."

" We are extremely proud of my sister Cmdr Hansen! She has ALWAYS placed her family and others in front of herself. She is a strong Christian, a great prayer warrior and a loving wife and mother. And she has the fortitude and loyalty to country that most folks don't have and don't understand. My sister serves not only her family, but yours as well. How many of you can say you do half as much??! "

" To "family", sounds like the same statement former Mayor Rudy defended about the VP candidate Sarah Palin at the RNC.
We would never imply that a man doesn't put his famiy first if he is a mayor, governor, president, or even a soldier. I'm not saying I disagree with you, but I doubt everyone feels that about men serving is all I have to say. "

" No matter the glory and self-status of ones achievements, it looks as if family should be number one. Being away for such long periods of time sure does not look as if family is important to this individual. "

" Sounds like she has more experience than Mccain's running mate. I say we give her a chance. "
