HealthPoint closes Augusta facility: Employees given 10 minutes to clear out
Tuesday, September 30, 2008 6:52 PM EDT Print this story | Email this story
AUGUSTA -- Leaving a gaping wound in Bracken County health care availability, HealthPoint Family Care abruptly closed the doors of its Bracken County offices Tuesday.

Staff members learned of the decision to permanently close shortly after 12:30 p.m.

HealthPoint has operated from the site for six years, after four years at a Brooksville site, officials said.

Stunned staff members were in tears and upset at the way they were told of the corporate decision, but they were also concerned about the way patients were left in the dark about their immediate medical care needs.

Unaware of the closing plan of corporate officials, local staff had been contacted on Monday and told to cancel patient appointments for Tuesday, due to a noon mandatory staff meeting.

In need of a prescription, one patient arrived Tuesday to pick it up only to be turned away at the orders of HealthPoint officials on the site, witnesses to the event said.

"Patients need to know what their labs are, where they can get to their doctor and what to do. All they have is a note on the door," one witness said. "That patient needed their prescription."

HealthPoint CEO Chris Goddard, along with corporate personnel Marc Bellisario and Sally Jordan were on site Tuesday to facilitate the closing. Goddard denied knowledge of such an incident with a patient.

"A letter will be sent to patients outlining their options," Goddard said.

By 2 p.m., locks on the facility had been changed and a note was posted on the door referring patients to different phone numbers, depending on their needs.

Though medical care providers, including doctors and nurse practitioners, were given 90 days to decide if they wanted positions in some of the multiple northern Kentucky offices operated by HealthPoint, all 10 of the support staff saw their livelihoods and in some cases health insurance evaporate in an instant.

All of the terminated employees are either mothers with children or grandchildren to support, or women with strong financial responsibilities in their families, a tearful, now former employee said as she returned at 2:30 p.m. to read the note to patients she had heard was left on the office door by HealthPoint officials.

"We thought it was going to be a 'need some downsizing' meeting like before. They separated us from the providers and we were told we had 10 minutes to get our (stuff) and get out. She (HealthPoint official Sally Jordan) wasn't even nice about it," she said.

Officials wouldn't answer questions, another ex-employee said.

"Sally (Jordan) threatened to call the police on one employee who wanted answers about patient needs. (The employee) told (Jordan) what the number to the police was for here, but did get her things and left peacefully," she said.

Axed employees were given a packet of information and a one-week severance package was mentioned, another ex-employee said.

Employees could possibly go into the COBRA insurance program, though that program puts a large financial burden on former employees who want to maintain it, she said.

"A little hard to (pay for) unemployed," she said.

After a locksmith left the facility, a car pulled into the parking lot and a woman exited to read the notice.

"This is all these people have got," said Liz White of Augusta. "It was the only (clinic) they could afford."

Her daughter-in-law and her children, and grandchildren were patients of the facility and had asked White to check on the rumor of the closing circulating since 12:30 p.m., she said.

"It is a shame they closed it. Someone donated the land so a medical facility would remain open here. I don't know how long that was for," White said.

Bracken County officials were equally stunned at the abrupt action of HealthPoint, but not without experience at a similar incident.

"They did the same thing a while ago, jerking people around," said Bracken County Judge-Executive Gary Riggs.

Riggs did not believe the HealthPoint statement issued by Goddard on Tuesday afternoon.

"Sadly, today, due to the economics of health care and lack of a strong community patient base, HealthPoint finds it can no longer continue to serve the patients of Bracken County," Goddard wrote.

"That is bunk, the place was wall to wall with patients. It was hard to get appointments," Riggs said. "I hope and I am sure there is another doctor out there who would like to come here. There are plenty of patients."

Ex-employees agreed with Riggs.

"(HealthPoint) wants to point at the number of patient who left when doctors Guttman and Neus left in February, but with the new doctors on board the patient numbers have been climbing again," the woman said.

Asked to comment on whether the volume of patients using the services of HealthPoint at the site was growing, Goddard did not have specific numbers. Asked if the amount of money generated by the patients, citing personnel claims of increasing patient load, was a deciding factor in the closing, Goddard declined to get into specifics and referred questions to his written statement.

In the statement, HealthPoint gave patients three options, stay with HealthPoint and travel to a facility in northern Kentucky; go to Primary Plus in Maysville; or call to have their medical records transferred to another health care provider.

The accompanying flood of phone calls from patients came as a surprise to Primary Plus offices where Guttman and Neus had set up practice after leaving HealthPoint, Primary Plus officials said Tuesday.

Primary Plus is not affiliated with HealthPoint, officials said.

Sale plans for the Augusta-Chatham Road facility have not been made. Though not on the market at this time, the building could someday house another medical practice, just not HealthPoint, Goddard said.

"We are not at (the point of selling the property)," Goddard said.

Reopening the facility as a HealthPoint facility is not an option at this time.

"HealthPoint is not in the position to do that," he said.

Goddard emphasized his disappointment in the Bracken facility not succeeding, acknowledging he had often referred to the site as "his baby."

"It was my vision to have it work, sadly, it did not," he said.

Another car pulled into the HealthPoint parking lot shortly before 3 p.m., another ex-employee, still in work clothes was taking a peek at the information posted for patients.

"We called ourselves family here," she said. "You don't treat family like they did us or their patients."

According to a family member of one physician affiliated with the site, a comment from providers may be available when they have more information on what their future with HealthPoint may or may not be.

Has anyone involved called Mitch McConnnell and Geoff Davis? Regardless of their politics, remember it is an election year and I am sure that this "non-profit" organization doesn't want a Congressional investigation into their finances and their poor communication skills. 60 days for records, that's against the HEPA laws!! Why isn't this on 60 Minutes....get the media involved!!! "

I knew I must find another healthcare provider, so I made my phone call to Maysville PRIMARY PLUS. If people get real sick and need a doctor give (PRIMARY PLUS) a call. My heart goes out to all the staff members some were just like my family and that is why I stayed with health point was because you knew when you walked through that door they were ging to treat you with respect. The doctors were going to do everything possible to get you feeling like yourself again. I hope that they all find jobs soon, becuse these (hillbilly)people are NO AMETEURS. hopefully I will see them in the Maysville office. YOU GO GUYS AND GALS. "

" I am not and never will be an employee of Healthpoint. (I would have requested the police be called!)

But more to the point, many of the comments and feelings expressed are based in the values that we were raised with. Bracken County is not nearly as backwoods as many of our city counterparts might believe. We understand loyalty, integrity, caring, trust. But sometimes we forget that not everybody does. The need to close the Bracken office may appear to be an "economically" sound move for Healthpoint. The manner in which it come about was neither ethical or economical to anyone. I agree that those folks (including the physicians that were left high and dry) who are able, should boycott Healthpoint. The comments and statements that have been expressed by the former staff members have all been concerns for the people of Bracken County and the patients that were seen at the Augusta office.

The treachery and evilness of the Healthpoint administration hasn't even come to light. Because the office was closed on the last day of the month, when the staff members got into their vehicles that day, they were without insurance or benefits. Now I am not certain of the details of their benefits packages, but if they had matching 401Ks and an escape clause, the employees will only get what they themselves contributed. To put it in plain language, Healthpoint put the screws to their employees in every manner possible.

When anger and frustration is expressed, it should be aimed in the right direction. Healthpoint ADMINISTRATION left this county, it's patients and all it's employees without medical care and jobs. They did this in the same manner a spoiled child would throw out a toy, with no contingency plan in place. They took it for granted that other local agencies would step in. That those agencies did, says more about them than Healthpoint. Healthpoint did not exhibit corporate responsibility. They should have prepared the surrounding agencies and their patients for this outcome.

It has always been my belief that we all must answer for the actions we have taken. "

" I have had some interaction with Sally and Chris in the past on a business level, and hearing how the office was closed does not supprise me. There are many organizations out there that run similar types of heathcare clinics, some are fantastic, some need a bit of work, but these types of places should not be lumped in with the likes of HealthPoint. The management at HealthPoint is the acception to the rule when it comes to this type of Health Clinic organization, most of the others around the OH/KY area are fully patient oriented and struggle very hard to stay afloat, going to absurd measures to serve the people they service. While the vast majority of the staff at HealthPoint cares as much about the patients as could be asked for, the administration group has just made a very long series of poor choices, and this is just another sad example of one of them. Best of luck to the Staff that lost their jobs, and to the people of Bracken County. "

" Interestingly, I checked the HealthPoint website and found these core values listed there:

The HealthPoint Family Care Values

Patients: We exist to serve the needs of our patients. Our work must be performed with a focus on the needs of our patients and their families.
People: Our people are our most important resource. Their character determines our reputation and strength.
Teamwork: We are a team. We must treat each other with trust and respect and work together to accomplish our vision and mission.
Quality: To achieve customer satisfaction, the quality of our services must be our Number 1 priority.
Continuous Improvement: We must strive for excellence in everything we do by continually improving both our internal processes and our patient services.
Integrity: We must always conduct our business in a manner that is socially responsible and commands respect from our patients, competitors, regulators and the communities we serve. www.healthpointfc.org

It certainly doesn't look like they are following their mission statement. If they were getting all that money from the government I don't know how they didn't stay afloat financially. Maybe they were paying too many administrators because I know the doctors were hard- working. "

They never really cared about the hard-working patients who needs health care or the hard-working employees who need to put food on the table for their families. I bet they are not worried about if they will have enough money to put food on the table or if their child is sick and needs to go to doctor because the money that came out of your pocket went straight into theirs. When upper management says this is my baby they are full of !@#$. Again I am so sorry for the patients and employees you all are my prayers.
Hint: Maybe Bracken Countians need to rally together and run their own Health Center and leave outsiders (management) out of it. I know their is funding and grants that this could happen. You have to BELIEVE. "

" Well, Once again the common people get the shaft. I was a patient at Healthpoint but I moved to Primary Plus when Dr. Neus went there. They are so busy up there that it takes a week to get an appointment. But every time I go up there, I always see several people from Bracken County. Maybe Primary Plus should buy the building and put Dr. Neus and Dr. Marksberry back in Augusta, and let all the Bracken County patients come back to the Augusta office. What does the family who donated the land for Health Point to be built on think about all of this? I'm sorry for all the employees who lost their jobs but working for such an uncaring organization must have been stressful for them in many ways. I hope all the citizens of Bracken County will write to their congressman and let people know just what is going on in this county. Someone needs to try to get some justice for all of us. "

" This process was totally inappropriate, especially for the patients. I would implore all impacted individuals to call on the board of directors or the regulatory agencies requesting the specifics for the closure of this site. Or a call to the local politicians, being so close to election time, I'm sure your concerns will be addressed. Times are tough and financial resources are depleting for governmental assisted programs. If there was no other recourse for this medical practice, it was handled unethically and unprofessionally and the parties involved should be held accountable. "

" Unfortunately, this was inevitable. I left HealthPoint on good terms and long before Sally Jordan joined the company, but I have always felt that it was a top-heavy organization. It was interesting to see what HealthPoint received in funding. What would be more interesting would be to see what percentage of that went to pay the salaries of those at the top. I fully feel that these executives should disclose their salaries and benefits. Not the doctors, but the management team. The current feeling I get from my friends that still work for HealthPoint is that its leadership is holed up in an ivory tower, very far removed from the day-to-day reality and unwilling to dirty their hands to gain some insight. "

To Bracken County kick them out of that donated building and give it back to Dr Marksberry ,if you cant do that ,then find him one to practice in.We need HIM !! If we all stick together we can find a solution to this problem and i believe Dr Marksberry is it. Augusta has the old KU Building that could be used as an Office for now. Not enough effort was made by Admin to remedy everything. We have been having problems with our phone system for months, we wanted to schedule our patients ourselves due to the high volumn of complaints from patients that they could never get through. We were told NO, it had to go through the call center. The complaints from patients and us didn't seem to matter. Therefore we got the blame for never answering the phone and lost patients to other providers. As far as the statements by Goddard that our office was "his baby", BULL!!! You never would have ignored it for so long, jerked people around or treated us the way you did on Tuesday!! Oh,wait a minute, I forgot.. you left!! Stop blowing smoke Mr. Goddard! While this may have been a non-profit enterprise nevertheless they still have to make enough money to cover operating costs and clearly this was not happening. As XXXX has stated, many self-pays never pay their bills and add to this the fact that insurance companies, Medicare and Medicaid have slashed payments to medical facilities it's a wonder Healthpoint remained in operation this long. My spouse works for a doctor in Maysville and says they seldom collect more than 35 cents on every dollar owed them and still patients try to stiff them on co-pays and bills. Too many people not paying their bills will cause the system to collapse just like the mortgage system is failing now. "

People have to work to survive, My husband works in augusta factory and we still struggle to pay bills. We cannot afford to cover all of our small family, and I wouldn't hesitate to take one of my kids or myself there. Maybe you should think before you speak.
Let's not forget all these families out of work. Are you blaming them for working there? They have to support themselves and their families too. You shouldn't pass judgement on them because they chose to work there.
The news is just saddening to me. With the economy as bad as it is, these families will have to suffer more. This is a depression. People barely make enough to live let alone for their medical needs. It's truly a sad situation for all involved. "

DOESN'T PEOPLE REALIZE IT COSTS EVERYTIME YOU GO TO THE DOCTOR WHETHER YOU HAVE MONEY OR NOT.......THATS THE PROBLEM WE HAVE NOW WITH OUR COUNTRY, NOBODY WANTS TO WORK AND EVERYBODY WANTS SOMETHING FOR NOTHING. IT IS A SAD THING THAT THEY CLOSED THEIR DOORS BUT I BET YOU ANYTHING IF THEY WERE MAKING A PROFIT THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. THEY WERE TAKING PEOPLE ON A SLIDING SCALE AND WAS NOT MAKING ENOUGH TO KEEP IT OPEN. "

Healthpoint is a non-profit organization that has received over $1,700,000 in federal assistance in 2007. They have received over 1,000,000 dollars per year for at least the last 4 years! Please contact congressman Geoff Davis and ask that this money be refunded! "

" One more reason why private companies should not be in the medical care business. This is just a sample of what Obama wants in our healthcare system. If you think that our financial system is messed up, our healthcare system is just following suit. Compare your medical bills from meadowview with the same treatment recieved from a county or other not-for profit facility. The almighty dollar speaks. Big business and private companies don't care about your health. "

" I think Healthpoint needs to find a new CEO! Chris Goddard, Marc Bellisario, and Sally Jordan should all have ten minutes to get their stuff and get OUT! Dr. Steven Neus was my primary doctor for years but when he left Healthpoint, I stayed. After he left, when I called for an appointment I didn't even specify which Dr. I wanted to see. It didn't matter because they were all great! Not only the Drs. but all the employees and staff were excellent! Every time I walked through those doors I was greeted with a smiling face and a helping hand. Goddard referring to this site as "his baby" is a joke. If this is how he treats all "his babies" Healthpoint will surely go under and fast! All my thoughts and prayers are with all the former employees who were treated really bad and as if they don't matter. To all your patients, you DO matter and you will be greatly missed. Hopefully there will be somebody new to take over the site, someone with integrity and someone who will have a little respect for their employees and patients. After the way the employees were treated and everyone left in the dark about what's going on, I'll never be the patient of another Healthcare Facility. "

People have such a hard time financially & medically that its extra hard sometimes to find a doctor who will take them in. They should have at least been decent enough to give the patients & employees a notice. What in the world has our society come too? "

If was everyone of the patients I would advised not to go either, They didnt care a patients need thier medicine. Bogus you ask me.. not enough patients. If it was true . They would have done it a better way . It sad they were rude to employees . They are hard workers out there. It is so hard to believe that didnt have respect for anyone there. "

We Stand behind the people who made us what we are, not fire them after 9 years of success. It only took 7 months to destroy what our neighbors and friends made in 9 years. I wish Doctor Marksberry would open a practice in Augusta along with Doctor Aden and they could hire some of the nurses and people that worked there !! "
