Candidate Obama stops for carry-out in Georgetown
Saturday, October 11, 2008 12:18 AM EDT Print this story | Email this story
GEORGETOWN, Ohio -- Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama paid a surprise visit to a Georgetown restaurant Thursday.

The U.S. senator from Illinois "just drove in," according to William Seip of the Fireside Restaurant.

Seip said Obama's party arrived between 6 and 6:30 p.m. with three buses, three or four SUVs, and multiple law-enforcement officers on motorcycles including state and local police as well as Secret Service agents.

About two hours prior to Obama's arrival, Seip said a man on a cell phone who appeared to be from the Secret Service entered the restaurant and remained until after Obama's departure.

Obama was on his way to a scheduled appearance in Portsmouth at Shawnee State University. He had just finished a campaign appearance at Ault Park in Cincinnati.

Seip said no one knew the candidate would be stopping at the eatery since there was no call made to warn of the visit prior to the campaign's stop.

"There were a few people here," said Seip. "Everybody thought he would be stopping in the north end of Georgetown," where a crowd had gathered near Democratic headquarters on rumors Obama would pass through the town.

Seip said there were a few people eating in the restaurant when Obama arrived including Georgetown Mayor Dale Cahall and Administrator S. Kelly Jones. According to Seip, the mayor is a regular customer at the restaurant and both officials happened to be eating when Obama arrived.

Both officials had the opportunity to shake hands and meet Obama.

"He got his stuff to go," said Seip.

The presidential candidate and one other gentleman from the party placed orders. Seip said Obama's order included the Big O'Burger (a double decker cheeseburger), French fries, two orders of waffle fries, lemon pie, coconut cream pie and chocolate cream pie.

"I think Obama's was the coconut cream pie," said Seip.

Seip said all of the pies served at the restaurant are homemade by family members.

"He was a real nice guy. He was really down to earth," said Seip. "I was really impressed. When you talk to someone personally like that it makes a difference."

When asked if Obama would be getting his vote in November, Seip said that he always keeps his vote private.

"Probably changed my mind one way or another," said Seip about the opportune visit.

" Would every one please read Obamas web page and find out what he is about . You will also find out the truth , not the lies you have been told and you might be able to pick a president who can fix this county . Or are you scared of the truth and want more years of what you have right now . His web site has proof that shows what people are saying is lies !! "

" Well lets see...Obama was against funding for our troops and he is a supporter for abortion. Doesn't sound to me like he cares about Americans!! Especially some of the most important ones, our soldiers and our children. "

" I have no idea at this point who to vote for. After listening to the debate I feel that Obama would be the best person for this country but something is still not right the fact that he has Muslim ties scares me. I want things to be better that the last 8 years . If things don't change we are going to starve and freeze to death. I was raised to be a democrat however I Vote for the best man. I'm sorry but I don't feel at this point that either of the 2 running is what this country needs. Lets face it this country is going down fast and if we don't do something its going to take us down with it. I suggest that everyone really think about this ,even pray about it ,no matter what the party. Don't cast your vote out of dedication to your party ,cast your vote out of dedication to your country and most of all to your self. Don't make your self responsible for 8 more years of this !! Clinton and Bush promised a lot of great things to remember that. And we are living that right now !! "

" If Obama stopped at a carry out it would be better if someone carried him out....completely out of the country. "

" It is time for Americans,Democrats and Republicans to put all racial barriers
aside and think of the state of our economy, jobs, foreclosures, education and etc. There are all walks of life that this affects and it has nothing to do with the skin color. Did you know that God is not segergrated? He made us all in His image. Would He be pleased with all this bickering of someone skin color as opposed to their intelligence? Think about that while you decide who you want for President. "

" To "conderned christian" - Our forefathers did not fight for this country just for religion's sake. They fought for the basic human right to choose. I still don't know who I'm voting for, but to condemn Obama for saying that this country is a beautifully mixed palet of races, religions, etc. is pretty scary. Think about who are forefathers were fighting to gain this land and how they went about it? I don't think it's very Christian to barge into someone's home, kill their families, burn down their villages and steal their land. Just ask the Native Americans what they think about Obama's statement. "

" Personally, I'm a bit tired of reading and hearing about how these politicians plan on running the country. All we hear about is how the gas prices are changing, stock market is crashing, etc. etc. Can we just have a news story like this every great once in a while that just satisfies our curiosity for basic entertainment? "

" As I was listening to a news program last night, I watched in horror as Barack Obama made the statement with pride. . .'we are no longer a Christian nation; we are now a nation of Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, . . . As with so many other statements I've heard him (and his wife) make, I never thought I'd see the day that I'd hear something like that from a presidential candidate in this nation. To think our forefathers fought and died for the right for our nation to be a Christian nation--and to have this man say with pride that we are no longer that. How far this nation has come from what our founding fathers intended it to be. "

" So, who cares if Obama stopped in Georgetown or Fizzleville? And beyond that, who cares what he ordered? This is the type of idiot mindset that has put our country in non-practicing morals, dog-eat-dog society and one that is for the rich only. If any of you think this "good old boy" with his fake caring will change our country one little bit need your heads examined. Would anyone be interested or would even report what Jesus ate if he were to stop at a hick town restaurant or any other restaurant for that matter? Politics are the downfall of our society with all the crooks and make-believe caring ones running for office. Pie versus issues....which is the most important? "

" You have to be kidding. This is "news"? Spend a minute meeting this man and your views will change? Color should be taken out of this race? Amazing that such a comment is made and yet race is evidently a main element for lol....and maybe he could teach proper grammar and spelling to ithink...Lord, please help us. "

" I can't believe this. This man is running for President and all you care about is what he ordered for lunch. There are more important issues at hand other than which pie he had. I hope you base your vote on what he has to offer our country rather than his choice in lunch. "

" "Down to earth" is exactly why Obama will be our next great president. He will put an end to the republican platform of trickle down poverty and give us all back the trickle up american dream! Color should be taken out of this race! We all know that the only color that we need to worry about now is green. The republicans have us trillions and trillions into the red. The only color I fear is pale white---the color my children will be when they starve to death under republican tyranny and disdain for the middle class! I demand a president with an above average IQ for a change! Not a senile old man and a racist twit bimbo! "
