Aberdeen mayor taken to task during council meeting
Wednesday, October 8, 2008 12:42 AM EDT Print this story | Email this story
ABERDEEN, Ohio -- By a five to one margin, Aberdeen Village Council members handed Mayor Garland Renchen a vote of no confidence during Monday night's council meeting.

The vote took place following the reading of a statement by Councilman Larry Schlomer. Schlomer claimed that Renchen had displayed emotional immaturity and outbursts during council meetings, and cited what he called the mayor's disrespect for police officers.

Schlomer said his decision to ask for the vote came during a recent meeting of the safety committee in which he said the mayor displayed an "adversarial style."

Schlomer made the motion, asking council to vote for the "no confidence" designation in Renchen.

Renchen reminded council that he is an elected official and as such council has no power to remove him from office.

Administrative Assistant to the Village Lorna Julian was in attendance during Monday's meeting and told Schlomer that she had "seen day in and day out" what she called unacceptable behavior toward the mayor by many people.

"It's embarrassing," said Julian about officials' behavior towards the current mayor.

Residents attending the meeting almost immediately began to voice dislike toward the mayor, council members and police departments inability to get along and work together.

"You all gotta do something good for this town and good for the village," said one resident as he addressed council. "Aberdeen is in the paper for the wrong reasons. Let's put it in for the good reasons."

Before the vote was taken, Councilman Peter Chamness reminded Renchen the vote would not be a vote removing him from office, but a vote of no confidence.

Only Councilman Robert Hutchison stood by Renchen during the vote.

Former Mayor Billie Eitel addressed council, Renchen, and the APD saying, "I would like to see you all get together and sit down."

Eitel said the mayor will continue to hold his position for three more years and that everyone needed to get over their issues and work together.

"Total misunderstanding and disrespect between everyone in the room," said Eitel.

As the meeting appeared to be winding down, Hutchison took the floor and said, "Larry, I'm really disappointed by you because I thought you were smarter than that."

Hutchison laid blame for the dysfunctional relationship between council and the mayor's office on previous Mayor Robert Meadows, who he said "fixed things" as he left office so that Renchen did not have anyone to work with.

"There is a coalition of conspiracy on this council," Hutchison said.

Hutchison also commented on the problem of "micro-management present in this political body here."

"I have never seen such a mob mentality as the people that come to these meetings," Hutchison said. "We need to get out of these petty politics boys. Garland's not a crook. If you claim you're Christians, then you need to act like Christians."

Hutchison's statements were followed by applause from the audience.

Councilman Hugh Hall then said, "We as a group, we are going to work together. It's going to take all of us."

Julian said she attributed the "loss of control" exhibited by officials to "all these people who love this village and spew frustration."

Council members agreed with Julian.

"It's a little bit of both," Hall said.

" Why do some of these people seem threaten by past Mayors? Their term is over, their influence is over,(if they ever had any). Everybody needs to step up to the present and deal with the issues that are destroying this town. "

" Looks like the State of Ohio needs to step and investigate the Mayor. Aberdeen is too nice of a town to let someone run it down. Mayor Renchen have been better off too not to listen to a former female Mayor!!!! "

" Aberdeen's issues are so multi-leveled Dr. Phil and Oprah could both have a season worth of episodes... the small town mentality of all the parties involved leads me to see the State of Ohio stepping in or Ripley eventually annexing what will be left of this small village after the real business at hand... you know, business that are hurting and residents will inadequate law enforcement protection
have rolled up and blown away are gone. Petty personal issues are for elections not elected people. Get it together, Aberdeen! "

" Why does it have to be a conspiracy. Its wrong for another Councilman to insinuate this how professional. It sounds to me it was insinuated to take the focus off the problem in hand. Maybe the simple thing is the Mayor is not doing his job and council wants the public to know. which they should thats there job. I know Councilman Larry Schlomer and Councilman Peter Chamness. I believe they are the type of people who would stand up for what is right. If Councilman Schlomer and Councilman Chamness voted yes on the no confidence I believe there is a true issue at hand. The problem starts at the top. The Mayor is the head figure its his job to make sure all departments is working for the better of the community. It sounds to me if council are voting the Mayor no confidence there is a true leadership issue. "

" Yet once again the Aberdeen greats have made fools of themselves all over again. Will this foolishness never cease to exist? It would be quite the headline if any of these village officials made the newspaper reflecting a good light. And, what a shame to down Bobby Meadows and blame him for the present discord in the council matters. Has he not been going through enough with health issues? Blame can be spread ever so easily and truth is so hard to come by. All of you children should take a lesson in how to get along and run a village, not run a village into the ground. "

Amusing wrote on Oct 8, 2008 8:59 PM:

" I find it quite an amusing read to view some of these posts. 'Aberdeen resident' and 'all wrong again' are obviously written by the same individual with the same words used in both posts. Then the 'A ABERDEEN RESIDENT' is a typical hick town written post. The spelling is simply unbelievable and if one cannot spell correctly should not type their comments. Just for starters, one correction I will make is....'A ABERDEEN RESIDENT' should be 'An Aberdeen Resident'. Wow! This could be classified as the comic section of the online paper. "

Non-Resident wrote on Oct 8, 2008 7:28 AM:

" I'm not from Aberdeen and honestly I'm nothing but amused by the situation there, but it does strike me that Councilman Hutchison would throw out the statement "If you claim you're Christians, then you need to act like Christians." What is this statement implying?

Are Christians supposed to go along and keep their own personal thoughts and opinions to themselves? Apparently the rest of the council and the people that attend the meetings are making, at least some of, their displeasure public and not hiding their complaints.

Stating an opinion/concerns (whether good or bad) is the right, no it is the obligation, of all citizens who elect an official. To blindly go along with something people do not feel is right is what has taken this country down the wrong path. We've expected political leaders to simply do their job and they typically have...but overall they've done it BADLY.

I'm not talking about a Christian / Non-Christian direction for government, I'm a firm believer in the separation of church and state. But the statement of acting like Christians strikes me as an implied hint to use religion to guilt people into being silent.

When elected any official should know they can please some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time (to paraphrase a quote). Don't complain about the people coming out with issues and concerns about the mayor, complain about the people staying home who support the mayor. "

There is no place for favoritism, good ole boy, family politics in a one horse...sorry, HALF horse "village". Do the job! "
