Maysville treated to Victorian Garden Party
Sunday, October 5, 2008 9:59 PM EDT Print this story | Email this story
Maysville children got a taste of Victorian era fun during a Victorian Garden Party hosted by the Mason County Public Library as part of the Big Read program Sunday.

Paddle dancers, jointed wooden figures held at the end of a rod and caused to move by tapping a paddle to the feet, entertained one group of children while others gave hoop games and cornhusk doll making a try.

As part of the Big Read program, children and adults were also encouraged to read more, as some ventured inside to the stacks of books waiting to unleash fanciful adventures on readers.

Crafts classes were also offered to those who attended, and refreshments were on hand in proper garden party fashion.

The Big read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to improve reading for pleasure activities in the Unites States. In the recent effort, communities were asked to choose one book with U. S. roots, in the case of Maysville it is Edith Wharton's The Age of Innocence, which is set in the Victorian era, 1870-1900, in the U.S.

Communities are encouraged to read and discuss the book in a variety of ways.

Sunday's Victorian Garden Party was the way local organizers decided to entice new readers, organizers said.

In addition to Mason County and Flemingsburg public libraries, Kentucky Gateway Museum, Maysville Community and Technical College, Washington Opera House, Written Word Bookstore, community centers and schools have been encouraging incorporation of the novel into activities at each location.

" Wow, what a comment from RZM. Why would that be slown news? Something educational bores you, huh?
What a disgrace!

I think it is wonderful what they did there. You might have had fun if you had gone down and participated. But, then again - I guess you would rather have the idea that NOTHING goes on in Maysville, right? "
