Ledger Independent staff scare up winning display

BLUE LICKS -- There will be no crows at Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park this October.

More than a dozen straw-filled crop guards have appeared at the park this week for the "Scarecrows in the Park" contest.

When the straw had settled and the votes tallied, judges at BLBSRP named The Ledger Independent entry the winner, park officials announced over the weekend.

"It was close between the Robertson (County) Public Library and the newspaper. Judges had a really hard decision to make. I am glad I didn't have to choose; everybody did a very nice job," Park Manager Stefanie Gaither said.

Not a straw was left unbundled as the displays seemed to appear overnight leading up to the Oct. 1 deadline and themes varied at each vignette.

Robertson County Nursing and Rehabilitation set up a grouping with a maintenance scarecrow fixing the light for a scarecrow playing bingo, Robertson County Judge-Executive Billy Allison and his wife, Karla set up a picnic in the park. A scarecrow kayaker paddled for Setter Ridge Outfitters, while in another a tractor pulls a wagon filled with baskets of angry apples in a display created by Hilltop Orchards of Johnsville. The Nicholas County Arts Guild erected a scarecrow who appeared to be painting a picture of a pumpkin, while nearby a well stuffed scarecrow created by park staff members had caught a bony fish for all to see. Aboard a concrete tractor and wagon, the Allison Concrete display was a smiling scarecrow hauling corn along a picket fence.

Robertson County Public Library was well represented, complete with a group of scarecrow children and librarian scarecrow reading to them.

In the winning entry, the B. and S. Crow family, including Sonny and parents, Sally and Bud are featured enjoying reading about the park in the newspaper, cooking from recipes in the Lifestyle section and surfing the Internet for sports information with a pumpkin painted like a University of Kentucky basketball nearby.

"They really drew the park into the display as well. I think that may have helped put it over the top," Gaither said.

Even the family cat gets into scene, with a black feline perched on top of a Ledger Independent newspaper box nearby.

The display was created by newspaper staff members Molly Allison and Wendy Mitchell, who designed, stuffed and painted the display on site Sept. 28, to the delight of onlookers.

"We had a ball doing it. It was so much fun," Allison said.

Staff member Stephanie Applegate assisted from the office creating waterproof newspaper pages.

Funds derived from the event fund the Kentucky Employees Giving Fund, Gaither said.

The prize, a $75 gift card for the park gift shop, will be used as part of The Ledger Independent holiday spirit project this year, officials said.

The displays will be in place through Oct. 31 as part of several ongoing Halloween theme and fall activities at the park, Gaither said.

" Finding stories of community affairs that are light-hearted and jovial are quite the reward in this fast-paced, angry world. If "puff" pieces are not enjoyed by those who complain about them, there are plenty of other horrible stories for you to read. I do not think the folks who participated with long hours of work regard this article as "puff". Maybe RZM needs a refresher course in stopping and smelling the flowers and along the way they may just find that they enjoy this sort of thing. "

" I find it delightful that puff pieces are put in the paper. It is so tiresome to read of bad, horrible, sad, tragic and dirty news stories. I have a suggestion for you......take your vehicle to any of the surrounding areas you mentioned in your post and fill your gas tank up there with the cheaper gas. Along the way you may find some puff attractions to view and maybe they will soothe your irritated self. "

" Just remember, Blue Licks State Park is in Robertson County not Nicholas. They have been trying to lay claims to the park for years.............. Robertson County needs some good publicity for once, don't give it to somebody else. "

" On the contrary, I'd like to see MORE pieces like this. Halloween happenings are always fun to read about. I think Maysville should have scheduled ghost walks from Hayswood, to Phillip's Folly, to the Washington Opera House. Ghost hunting is hot right night. Just turn on your TV if you don't believe me. Maysville has a ghost goldmine! It would bring people downtown and increase tourism! "

" While puff pieces like this may be of interest to a few readers I would think that far more readers would like to see the Ledger do a story on why gasoline prices in Maysville have remained high while prices in surrounding areas have fallen 20-30 cents less per gallon. Just a suggestion. "
