Miller resigns tourism post to further education

AUGUSTA -- With some of his professional goals achieved, Augusta/Bracken County Tourism Director Steve Miller is bidding goodbye to the job.

"There was nothing political about my decision to turn in my resignation," Miller said Wednesday. "It was not a brash decision but one I had thought long about."

An opportunity to return to college and attain a new degree was a temptation Miller could not resist.

"I have a bachelors of arts, but never really used it. I am going to go for my bachelors in mechanical engineering," Miller said. "It is something I have always wanted to do and now is the best time."

Miller has already informed Augusta Mayor Wendell High of his decision which includes an offer to remain full-time until Oct. 9 and part-time until a replacement is in place.

"I will be training my replacement. I didn't want to leave anyone hanging with events still to come this season," Miller said.

Miller was hired for the position a little over a year ago, replacing Phil Weber who had headed the agency for several years.

Money was not the deciding factor in Miller's decision to resign since High had recently cleared the way for Miller to receive a sizable pay increase and the position currently includes insurance benefits.

"I appreciate that they gave me the increase, but I need to take this opportunity now. Classes begin in January and I have some rental properties I have to work on before then which will be my income while I am a student," Miller said.

Included in his achievements were stellar participation of stern-wheeler owners at the resurrected Regatta festival, expanded countywide driving tour routes, a real time ferry camera in Augusta and inclusion of Kentucky 8 in Bracken County on the Scenic Byways list.

"It has been a pleasure serving the community and I have enjoyed working with everybody involved in achieving these things," Miller said.

Miller said he believed High would either appoint someone or the position may be one which requires a public posting before a candidate is chosen.

"You would have to check with Wendell about that," Miller said. "There are very talented people out there."

High was not available to comment about a possible replacement.

Miller and his wife, Cynthia Thompson, the Augusta City Council attorney, live in Augusta.

" So where are all of these tourist dollars??? I would think the city would be better served by trying bring real long term jobs back instead of chasing tourist dollars that are seasonal at best and benefit very few. I'd rather see the city hire somebody to find new occupants for the now abandoned F.A. Neider factory than to waste precious funds on tourism. "

" Very good job.Every aspect of tourism in the county has moved forward, since you where named tourism director. GOOD LUCK. The mayor will need to think hard about your replacement, not everyone does the quality of work you have done, for the county.Good luck Mayor in finding a replacement. "

" Steve did a great job. The web site is a great improvement and really helps communicate to the town and tourists. Too bad the economy and travel are down so much. The true impact of Steve's job is outsiders money coming into Augusta and Bracken County. "

" Good job Steve and thanks for keeping things moving in the right direction.I hope your replacement can do the same. Thanks to the previous mayor who saw the need for this full time position.Good luck. I also hope that the mayor can see the importance of the police department here. "
