PrimaryPlus accommodating former HealthPoint patients
Thursday, October 2, 2008 2:05 AM EDT Print this story | Email this story
AUGUSTA -- As patients affiliated with former HealthPoint Family Care facility in Bracken County scramble to satisfy their health care needs, another agency is readying for what appears may be a flood of new patients.

"We were totally surprised," said PrimaryPlus CEO Jerry Ugrin on Wednesday, about the abrupt closure of HealthPoint's facility in Bracken County on Tuesday.

Ugrin had been in Maysville on Tuesday when talk began to spread at lunch time about a possible closure of the Bracken facility.

"I heard something about it, then the talk got louder and later it was confirmed," Ugrin said.

Families dependent on HealthPoint for medical treatment were confused by reports of HealthPoint in Augusta closing, after the office phone was apparently forwarded to a service which continued to make appointments for the Augusta site even two hours after the staff was terminated and the office closed for good Tuesday.

"I called the office number at 2:26 p.m., Tuesday and they made my husband an appointment for Friday at 3:30 p.m.," said Jennifer Etzel. "They never told me the office had closed and I specified the Augusta office. My husband is being treated for high blood pressure and they are trying different medications on him to control it. I went into a panic when I heard it had closed, but PrimaryPlus got him an appointment as an emergency."

Though not perceived as a good way to do business, the way the Bracken HealthPoint office closed was not illegal, Kentucky Office of Inspector General officials said Wednesday.

"It is a satellite office licensed as a primary care center under our regulation. We will be contacting them to voluntarily surrender their license, because the location closed," OIG spokesperson Janice Stewart said Wednesday.

Because HealthPoint included a phone number for PrimaryPlus, which is not part of its company, on a press release for patients to contact for health care, the PrimaryPlus office switchboard at Maysville has been lit up ever since Tuesday afternoon, Ugrin said.

"We were caught off guard and unable to plan for it. We will do all we can to accommodate everyone who comes to us, even if we have to temporarily move around some of our providers or hire new doctors," Ugrin said. "I have an application from a doctor to hire on my desk; I will be sending it out."

Primary Plus, based in Lewis County has offices in Tollesboro, Vanceburg, Flemingsburg and Maysville.

In February, two physicians with HealthPoint left the Bracken facility for positions with PrimaryPlus. At that time HealthPoint officials downplayed the loss and played up the acquisition of a new doctor and complete staff at the Bracken facility. It also closed the Robertson County facility in February and transferred Dr. Harold Markesbery from the facility to the Bracken site.

Where the providers from HealthPoint will be practicing is in the hands of the individual providers, officials said.

According to HealthPoint CEO Chris Goddard, all the medical providers from the Bracken site, " are freed of contract obligations if they choose to go elsewhere."

Those needing health care are welcome at their offices, Ugrin said.

It may take a little more time than usual to get through on the phone, due to the situation, but ," ... we will do everything we can for these people," Ugrin said.

In the meantime, Bracken County officials are continuing to solicit more medical care providers for the area, officials said.

"This is devastating for Bracken County residents who are patients and for those who lost their jobs. We are continuing to hope a doctor or new group come to the county," Judge-Executive Gary Riggs said.

" I do not understand the economic issue that is blamed for closing health pointe. I have since the two doctors left continued to go to health pointe and had the same issues of being able to get an appt. or being told to come and they would get me in and then set for long periods of time.

I think the issue is as with most non-profit agencies they can't keep staff due to the low salaries they pay and the disrespect they show their employees. "

" This message is for "open your eyes"-- your idea to blame Primary Plus for Healthpoints downfall is ridiculous. You can not "steal" patients or Physicians for that matter unless they are wanting to go. Get a life! "

" I read a post about the closing of Health Point at kypost.com. They indicated the reasons as being economics and lack of a strong community patient base. If patients were not happy with Health Point and went elsewhere for care then why not find out where the patients went and contact them to see if they might be interested in opening an office in Bracken County. If that happens then everyone will have a medical facility back in their home area that will satisfy their medical needs. "

" I am a patient of Dr Neus and followed him to Primary Plus. The staff there and the new office are wonderful. I give them my highest reccomendations and would love to see Primary Plus with a presence in Bracken county. We need good doctors who are well supported and have plenty of good help. "

How Can you Steal a patient wrote on Oct 3, 2008 12:21 PM:

" If the patient was happy with Health point and the staff and DOC's ....why did they leave!!! they had to be unhappy to go and search for another healthcare provider...Primary Plus is not perfect but they do try and figure out how to help the people in all of the surronding counties!!! "

" Saddened for the community but not surprised. HP had the chance to keep their past staff and physicians. It's not about money, the newer staff only got a taste of "Administrative Tactics". These were dedicated staff and physicians who gave their hearts, it wasn't just a paycheck. God created special people to take care others and it was not Chris Goddard who made Healthpoint, it was the staff/phys. Karma will come back and bite you in the butt and that is exactly what it did, as we all know these words, "you too can be replaced". You destroyed 9 yrs of hard work in less than 1 year. "

Chele wrote on Oct 3, 2008 8:24 AM:

" Primary Plus didn't steal any physicians nor did they cause the problem in the first place. Stop for just a second and think about that. Look how Health Point treated staff and patients when they shut the doors. Did the possibility every cross your mind that the doctors left because of the way Health Point treated them? Health Point knew a long time prior to actually closing the doors that this was the plan. They had new doctors on their staff and they had PLENTY of patients. They just DON"T CARE!!!!!!!!!! "

" EVERYONE TAKE NOTICE. ITS ALL ABOUT MONEY. WHEN WE HAD DR. CUMMINIS IN BROOKSVILLE; KY. HE WAS THE DR. IF YOU HAD MONEY OR NOT HE WOULD SEE YOU. HE CARED ABOUT HIS PATIENTS. HE DIDNT HAVE A BIG COMPANY TELLING HIM WHAT TO DO. DR. MARKSBERY PUTS ME IN THE MIND OF DR. CUMMINS. HE CARES ABOUT HIS PATIENTS. HEALTH POINT OR PRIMARY PLUS REALLY DONT CARE ALL THEY SEE IS DOLLAR SIGNS. THAT SAD TO. ITS HARD TO FIND A DR. THAT WILL SIT AND TALK TO YOU ABOUT WHATS WRONG WITH YOU. AND REALLY CARE. NOW WHAT ARE WE SUPPOSE TO DO? THE HOSPITAL IS JUST AS BAD. YOU DONT GOT MONEY. OR INSURANCE NO ONE WANTS TO LOOK AT YOU. "

former Health Point patient wrote on Oct 2, 2008 9:01 PM:

" One of the health care providers who went to Primary Plus last winter told me that Primary Plus wasn't afraid to spend the money to pay their staff a decent wage and also to spend the money to insure that the patients got the best health care they could provide for them. So quit blaming Primary Plus for this mess-- the former Health Point staff members went to P.P. because they were treated like people instead of nothing and they were concerned about better patient care, not the money. By the way, where has all the money gone? Shouldn't Health Point have to account to someone about the grants they received and the fees they collected? "

" This is to Peggy, one of the MA's at HealthPoint. I'm sorry to hear this is happening to you and your co-workers. I wish you the best of luck in securing other employment. I know you are a very caring, concerned person and they will be losing a valuable employee. And that's their loss. Good luck to the rest of the staff also. "

" As an ex-employee I am very concerned who gets the site. We were trying to help our patients even as we were being told to get out and for someone without the same ideas to come into the county is just wrong. Primary Plus recruited your previous docs away and left part of the void that was our demise. To not have someone come in that the people can trust is just wrong. We as employees were lyed to for a long time by Healthpoint and for someone that does the same things to come in is just wrong! We need someone that cares about our community and loves it just as much as we do!! Primary Plus is not it!!! "

" What a terrible shame for the people in Bracken County to be treated so disrepectful..Why on earth would any provider or patient or staff want to go down the road to another one of their facilities and get more of the same?.We are not dumb as rocks in Bracken County altho have been treated as such by this administration. His baby....what a joke!
He sure messed up a lot of good peoples lives in such a short period of time, when they knew some time ago of their plans..so unfair and uncaring, this is not what healthcare is supposed to be..Mission statements! Just empty words. You let a wonderful family donate the land for this facility, who did so in memory of their families and it served you well as long as it filled your pocket and now look what happened. "

PEGGY wrote on Oct 2, 2008 11:58 AM:

" I would like to thank Chele for her kind words. I am glad to see that our patients are getting their medical needs met. I worry so much about our patients. I stay awake at night thinking of them and all of the things that need to be done. However, I can no longer help. I want the patients of Bracken to know that I will miss working with them. My heart has
grown to love my job and the patients I
have worked with these past ten months.
I apologize for HealthPoint, even if they do not. "

openyoureyes wrote on Oct 2, 2008 11:39 AM:

" Can't you see. It was Primary Plus that stole HealthPoint's doctors and business. Prior to them coming along HealthPoints office was fine. It was Primary Plus that created all of this. They stole the doctors and all of the staff. HealthPoint opened in Bracken County to help it's people, because they did care. It was a risk to them. Once the office was solid and successful Primary Plus opened 10 miles away and immediately started stealing the practices that HealthPoint supported and all the work they had done. If you're going to blame someone, blame Primary Plus. They didn't care to work with HealthPoint. It's a fact. They have finally got what they wanted all along. They have shut down the competition. All they care about is expanding their empire. If they really cared about the patients they would have worked with HealthPoint. They didn't. They set out to steal their business and they did. "

" I also tried to get to the HealthPoint website comment center and could not do so. How convenient for them. BC will rebound from this. I just hope the local news channels get word of this so word can be spread about how HealthPoint horribly handled this situation. Maybe they would find themselves looking for jobs in the very near future. "

Chele wrote on Oct 2, 2008 8:14 AM:

" I want to say thank you to everyone at Primary Plus. I called because my husband will shortly run out of BP meds and they were wonderful. Through all of the caos they are stepping up to the plate to help all of the Bracken County residents that Health Point just tossed aside. I went to HealthPoints website and to the comment Center to try to get answers and guess what, the link is not working. Go figure. I have every intention of contacting United Way, who supplies help to HealthPoint and see what their reaction is. I am also going to find out if United way is going to continue to support them, and if that is the case I WILL NEVER again donate to the organization. I will also have the weekly contributions I have taken out of my check now stopped. My heart goes out to the employees and I will pray for them all to find new positions quickly. "
