Headline: Forty years and counting

For the past 40 years it has been the privilege of The Ledger Independent to cover the communities in our seven county area.

Along with that, we have also brought our readers news from the region, state, nation and throughout the world, all with an eye on what is most important to the communities and readers we serve.

The merger of Maysville's two daily newspapers, The Daily Independent and The Public Ledger, gave birth to The Ledger Independent on Oct. 1, 1968. On that first day the former rival newspapers shared a masthead, Publisher Jim Striplin wrote, "The policies of these newspapers will be continued, as in the past, projects that are deemed best for the welfare of the community and the area will be sponsored and pushed and it shall be the aim of these newspapers to keep progress and prosperity always in the forefront." He wrote of the potential for the area and the diversification which made that potential a real possibility.

Lots of things have changed in the ensuing decades -- a new press, a new facility for the newspaper, the addition of color and the advent of the Internet -- but that goal, to champion progress for our communities has not.

Over the last four decades we have reported the good, the bad and the ugly. Often the good was unbelievable, the bad unimaginable and the ugly almost unspeakable. But through it all, we have maintained those core values first voiced by Striplin in the first joint publication -- that we would serve the community and promote the area through the pages of The Ledger Independent. Keeping that promise, particularly in the multimedia world we face today, has been a challenge but one we strive to meet each day.

"We at The (Daily) Independent and The (Public) Ledger intend to do the most to serve you each day," Striplin wrote.

That vow remains true, perhaps more than ever, even 40 years later.

" How lucky we are as a community to have such professional and ambitious individuals working so diligently on behaf of their readers to obtain the day to day news within out comunity. I personally would like to not only congratulate the Ledger and all her employees for work well done, but thank you for the great job you do day in and day out in a field that can be at times wonderful and at others, horrible. The Ledger finds a way to report the news, not make it, which is certainly a rarity in today's world.
