A little pain, a whole lot of pleasure
Thursday, September 25, 2008 6:32 PM EDT Print this story | Email this story
Wednesday marked the somewhat official start to what many of us around here have come to know as Clooney craziness in downtown Maysville.

Streets were blocked for construction of the stage at Third and Market streets for the Friday and Saturday concerts; the "No Parking" and "Festival Parking" signs began to appear throughout the downtown area; and the general excitement of "different" began to fill the air.

But for those people who live and work at the center of the madness, the week is one which may instill more dread than excitement as their daily routines are disrupted with preparations for the event. We want them to know we appreciate their patience and understanding for allowing the annual event to take precedence over their comfort and convenience. We understand the annoyance it might cause and the frustration that can come with packing groceries or perhaps a child an extra block or parking in an unfamiliar spot away from your home or apartment. But we firmly believe that the concert and the spotlight it brings to our area is worth the hassle.

So to those of you who take the annual upheaval in stride or even those of you who are more vocal about it, we offer our thanks and our assurance that your sacrifice has not gone unnoticed.

And for those of you who have complained that Saturday's Rosemary Clooney Concert featuring Michael Bolton is too expensive, we remind you that there is plenty of free entertainment available -- from Friday night's "Parrots of the Caribbean" concert to a packed agenda of events Saturday and even a free listen-in from the downtown area Saturday evening. We urge you to take advantage of these.

It's for sure that an event the magnitude of the Clooney Concert doesn't come without some measure of pain. But it's also certain to us that the temporary pain is worth the eventual rewards we all reap in the end.
