Sarah, may I make a suggestion?
Tuesday, September 9, 2008 12:20 AM EDT Print this story | Email this story
Let’s see now.

Her name is Sarah Palin.

She is 44...married...the mother of five. She will soon be a granny.

She was a beauty queen, an in-your-face basketball player, and a hockey mom. She is a union member as well as belonging to the NRA.

She hunts and fishes.

She is pro-life. Surely everyone knows about her baby boy who has Down syndrome.

She is a politician, or rather, an anti-politician. That is, she is a dreaded and fierce enemy of the good ’ol boy network. She does not like “Big Oil” or big anything else, particularly big government.

She knows how to stand on her two feet and fight. To borrow from WLW’s Jim Scott, it is believed she hits from the men’s tees.

She got herself elected to the Wasilla, Alaska, (Maysville size) city council, then ran for mayor and won. She served six years.

In 2002, she ran for Lt. Governor of Alaska and lost. Twenty months ago, she ran for governor and beat the incumbent Democrat by almost 2-1.

Now she is a vice presidential candidate.

If Sarah Palin were a man, her accomplishments would be hailed as remarkable. If she were a man, the press would be talking about being on the fast-track to the presidency.

But she’s not a man. As such, the media is stuck on what it perceives as her lack of readiness to be commander-in-chief — particularly in the field of foreign policy.

At some point, during the Oct. 2 vice president debate, some moderator is going to ask Palin a hard question. It will be about that lack of experience, especially in foreign affairs. Her answer may have a profound effect on the outcome of the election. Accordingly, I suggest she answer this way:

“This is a fairly simple question, and ought not require 50 years of experience to answer.

“After all, Al Gore was my age — 44 — when he ran for the vice presidency in 1992. It is abundantly clear that what he knew or did not know about foreign policy had no effect on the election.”

“My opponent, Sen. Joe Biden, a patriot and an honorable man, first ran for the presidency in 1988. He was 46. What he knew or didn’t know about foreign policy had nothing to do with his not winning the nomination.”

“Thomas Dewey was 42 when he ran for president in 1944. He was governor of New York and had been a racketeer-busting prosecutor. His lack of foreign policy experience was a non-factor in his lopsided loss.

“Remember Dan Quayle? He was 41 when he ran for vice president in 1988. He apparently didn’t know a lot, and when it came to foreign policy he was clueless. He and the senior George Bush won anyway.

“How about Richard Nixon? He was 39, when he became vice president in 1952. At that time, Woody Woodpecker knew as much about foreign policy as he did.

“Theodore Roosevelt was 42 when he ran for vice president in 1900. In 1920, cousin Franklin was only 38 when the Democrats named him the party’s vice presidential candidate. Both grew into foreign policy giants.

“Now, if you will, let’s get the phone call at three o’clock in the morning out of the way.

“Know this: Know it tomorrow and the next day, next week, next year and all the years to come. I will make my decisions based on the best interests of my country and the American people. Period.”

“And if some renegade or terrorist country launches a missile attack on this nation, the country from which those missiles were fired will be unlikely to survive our initial retaliatory response.

“Talking won’t get it. I will not wait three weeks to have a meeting, I won’t wait on new polling numbers, and I sure as hell won’t seek advice from the United Nations.

“At the end of the day, it’s no big secret what will happen if I am thrust into the presidency. The Secretaries of State and Defense and the National Security adviser will be at my side. So will cabinet members, the State Department, Pentagon, Joint Chiefs, all other government agencies, and senior members of my party. Finally, one of the first people I will summons to the White House will be my opponent, Sen. Biden, an expert on foreign affairs. I’m certain he will come immediately...right Senator?

“Next question.”

" All I can say is WOW. There are so many things to comment about in these ramblings. I will try to hit all the points.

1. If you are voting your religion you are a fool. Religion is the true meaning of socialism and Marxism. Listen to what you have said. "a christian(with any morals)cannot vote for Obama. " You say this based on his views to keep abortion legal. He wants to keep the choice legal. If you want your government to tell you what you can and cannot do with your body then you are the socialist, communist, Marxist names you like to throw around. All this talk of let the people decide not the government, it changes when you talk of abortion or tax breaks for big companies. Anyway,

2. The wars. I would not even begin to comment or correct a brave soldier who has been in either place. For anyone on here to do so shows your complete loss of patriotism. You should be ashamed. If he is right or wrong is no matter. Until you go there, shut up and leave him alone. If you have been there and differ from his opinion, then go for it. But use your own experience, not what you were fed from fox news or the wheels of BushCo.

I would go on but my head hurts from all the ignorance posted here. I just hope Obama can bring everyone together since McCain is all about division. "

WE invaded a country that we didn't need to be in so that the Bushes and Cheney's of world could get their hands on the large oil reserves? Did you ever hear that the Bush family had interest in the oil platforms off Kuwait? If we are so concerned about human rights and that is now the argument, then why not sudan, or darfur, or even Nigera? What about China? No, this war in Iraq is senseless and a loss of life. Time line or not, when we leave all of it will break lose. Study the history of the area, and Kiki to you, learn what Marxist are really like. Give me a break, don't show your ignorance. " Here is a stance on Palin.
Check her record, really check it. McCain says he is againts earmarks, well he better reel in his running mate.
But when it comes to earmarks, Palin is no purist like McCain.

While she was mayor of the small town of Wasilla, Alaska, Palin hired a lobbyist to seek federal money for special projects. Wasilla obtained 14 earmarks, totaling $27 million, between 2000-2003, according to Taxpayers for Common Sense, a nonpartisan watchdog group that monitors federal spending.

As governor, Palin has asked for 31 earmarks worth $197 million for the 2009 fiscal year. State budget documents show that the state requested 52 earmarks worth $256 million for the 2008 budget year.

Several news organizations, including The Associated Press, have used a figure of $550 million in state earmark requests for the 2008 fiscal year. That information has been based on an op-ed piece written in March in the Juneau Empire by John Katz, the director of state-federal relations and special counsel to Palin.

The article was entitled: "Palin not abandoning earmarks altogether." "

The mayor of a town the size of Morehead, WOW!. She beat a governor who no one liked. A polar bear of that moose she eats could have won and then to say she can reform? Tell me what she has reformed? She isn't even informed? She wants to bomb Pakistan? Come on? Biden is going to chew her up and I wish Obama had really hit harder with McCain. Jeez, the war started a while back not only a year ago. The surge shouldn't have even been an issue to discuss, if Bush on his personnel crusade to take over the Iraq oil fields as his family did to protect their off shore investments back in the 90's when Daddy was king.
Also, if Cheney and Rice and others are so honest, why does Haliburton need to move out of the US. We need jobs, Give the 700 billion to all the home owners withthose banks not to Condie and Georgie crooked friends. Vote McCain if you want to see the country go downt he toilet. Depression here we come, what fun. "I have no experience in foreign policy. Foreign policy doesn't matter anyway. Who cares that we're at war. I won't even think about my response, but will instead defer to others. One of the guys I plan to defer to is my opponent, because he actually has the experience. Vote for me. Hee hee."

Um, yeah, why not just skip over the middle-(wo)man and vote for the guy who has the experience? What's the point in voting for you if you saying you're just going to go to him anyway?

It is a breath of spring air that both men and women in Maysville and the surrounding areas draw their own conclusions and opinions, never are led by popular vote, and stand firm to the philosphy that freedom of democracy and the right to vote is really what counts. Whatever your stand is politically, I applaud you for taking a stand, not being persuaded by past loyalties to any party and deciding on what is best for the country, the area, and the commonwealth as well as for yourself. THAT is why Kentucky is the commonwealth that it is - without reverance to gender, ethicnicity, or trendy. That is why both men and women in Kentucky are considered leaders - not followers! "
