Refrigerator connection

It seems almost every day among the complaints and comments called into the Comment Line, comes at least one with a request or inquiry. Those callers often leave their phone numbers, hoping to get a response from fellow readers on the where to get a sewing machine fixed or how to contact a carpet cleaner.

We appreciate our readers and their use of the Comment Line as a kind of community bulletin board. But we normally delete either the entire comment or at least the phone number to protect readers from the undesirable calls they could receive after having their phone number published.

So it was a few weeks ago and again Monday when a call came in asking us to publish a phone number. The gentleman said he was 90 and was looking for a used refrigerator he could buy. Having a soft spot for the elderly, I decided that I would contact him and try to make arrangements to find him the needed appliance without publishing his number. I would write a column making a case for finding the man a refrigerator, either cheap or perhaps even free. Knowing the generosity of people in our community, I figured he would have a fridge, probably a free one, before nightfall.

But the plan hit a snag almost immediately. The phone number we have didn't work.

So now, we have a senior citizen who needs a refrigerator, maybe even desperately, and no way to contact him for details on who he is or where he lives and how we can help.

However, hope does spring eternal, at least in this case and I still believe we can solve this problem and get our friend a good refrigerator in working condition in a jiffy. Here's how. First of all, I need the caller to contact me at 564-9091, ext. 270. Next, if anyone has a quality used refrigerator they would be willing to donate to one of our senior citizens, please call me at the same number. Problem solved.

Now, if only all our problems were that easy to fix.
