No solution in sight for oil
Monday, July 28, 2008 1:15 PM EDT Print this story | Email this story
Gas prices have eased down a bit over the past few weeks but $4 or nearly that for a gallon of gas continues to put a crimp in most family budgets and has many of us crying uncle.

Despite the struggle to fill our tanks for the necessities, like driving to work, Congress doesn't seem in any hurry to do anything that will have an impact within, say the next decade. And for many Americans, they will be way too late to save the family budget, perhaps even to save the family home. We need relief and, most of us would agree, we need it sooner rather than later.

We know that our seemingly insatiable need for energy must be curbed. We also agree that alternative fuels and energy sources are the keys to unlocking the ties that bind us to foreign oil. But many of those alternatives -- hydrogen powered cars, wind generated electricity -- are years and years in the future. And expensive, even elitist. And that makes it beyond the means of many, if not most Americans.

In the meantime, what is the average American who can't afford a $30,000 hybrid car or $20,000 for solar panels for their home going to do to survive? Must we sit back and wait for answers as we spend our retirement fund and children's college savings to put gas in the tank of our conventional cars, food on the table and electricity in the outlet?

We have entrusted Congress to find solutions not only for long term problems but for those which are more immediate. Whatever that entails -- drilling for more oil (now favored by 75 percent of Americans), putting the clamp on oil speculators or speeding up alternative fuel processes -- Congress needs to take a bit of advice from Larry the Cable Guy and "Git 'Er Done."

If not, soon the only alternative left for many of us will be fueled by hay, not gas.

" To Really.
Yes I do. The President may not control the price but he can effect it by what he does, like invading soverign nations to get at their oil, or going to war with a country that his family has oil of its shore lines.
Also, when you have the former chair of Chevron, Ms. Condy Rice and Dick, Vader Cheney and his haliburton croonies, you think that doesn't have an effect. The current bailout is one more way for them to get thier digs in our money before they leave. If it takes 700 billion to rid us of all the Crooks in the White House, I am up for part of the share. " I will keep saying this. Our government doesn't care about us. They care about oil, money, war, and power. We have solutions for alternative energy right now, not "years from now", but our government refuses to allow it because then the big oil companies would lose money. Big oil, like Standard Oil, owns and controls everything and almost everyone, from Sears to K-Mart to JC Penney. Oil controls much more than just gasoline prices; research it for yourself. Getting rid of oil is the solution, but it is going to be a tougher fight than we think, and it will take everyone writing letters, making phone calls, sending e-mails to our leaders and representatives, and voting for someone besides a Democrat or Republican. Just remember that most of our politicians are bought and paid for. It's hard to find one that goes against the grain and stands uf for the average person, like Ron Paul or Dennis Kucinich. In the end, they may just be another politician who promises things they can't or won't deliver, but we have to start somewhere and make our voices heard. America is a sleeping giant that needs to wake up. "

" To lol: Do you really believe that the President is keeping the gas prices high? Any President (democratic or republican) with the power to cut gas prices would do it in a heartbeat! He would then be a hero in this country and to his party. Something like that would also guarantee his party would stay in control of that office. That's what its all about.........keeping their respective parties in power, not doing what is best for the people. Don't get me wrong, I do believe more can be done and I also believe Congress is as much at fault as anyone, and I believe there is more to this than just supply and demand. "

" When an elected American oil man invades Iraq for its oil and then charges American prices for it, just what is the big surprise. You get what you vote for folks!!! Pay the man!!! Go Obama!!! "
