On May 20, Kentucky Democrats will have what has become an increasingly rare opportunity -- a chance to have a real say in who will eventually be named the party's presidential candidate.

With a primary so late in the season and as other states scramble to become the leaders in primary election dates, the results from Kentucky's primary in regard to national elections have become less and less meaningful over the past few decades. But this year, with the race between Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama so close, the tallies from the commonwealth will be eagerly sought after by both candidates.

Kentucky has 60 delegate votes to cast in the Democratic National Convention in Denver in August. Of those, nine are super delegate votes -- those votes given to party leaders within the state. How the remaining 51 will be divided is up to the voters.

If you are not registered to vote, you have until April 22 to do so if you want to vote in the May primary.

Last year, less than one out of four Kentuckians voted in the May primary election and little more than one out of three voted in the general election. Those numbers are discouraging to us and, we are sure would be no less disheartening to our founding fathers who fought so that each individual could have a say in their grand experiment in democracy.

Voting has been described as a privilege by some. We see it more as a duty, not to be taken lightly.

Please visit your county clerk's office before the registration deadline passes or visit www.sos.ky.gov to learn more about registering to vote and other election information, including how to file an absentee ballot.

Please register and vote. It's important to the candidates and it's important for the future of our nation. We hope it's equally important to you.

" The Read Issue is correct, though I think they should call themselves the REAL ISSUE. They are correct, let the people decide not the state political machines. They have proven to be very broken.
VOTE for the UN-INCUMBENTS this fall! "

The Read Issue wrote on Apr 2, 2008 10:54 AM:

" Is not that we can or don't vote or that this time our votes, MAY COUNT, but the fact that the candidates are typically chosen before we can vote. THE national DNC folks wanting one candidate to drop out now. Well doesn't sound like they are too concerned about us. If this is a national election, truly a national election, why don't we vote on the same day around the country? Then the people would have more reason to vote nad know that our vote in KY DOES Actually count. If you think it counts now, you are fooling yourself. What could possibly make you think it does with the current system. Plus super delegates can overturn the will of the real people in the party the U.S. citizens not Howard Dean or anyone else.
This mess is no different than BUSH stealing the election from the People in 2000 and look at the misguided policies since this mishap. Two Wars, economic problems, and very few if any policies that help us but do benefit the PROFIT MONGERS in the OIL BUSINESS.
Funny how Bush, Condi, Cheney and Rummie all has ties to that? "

" I have not voted in years. But that is MY right and not yours to judge. If people do not want to vote that is really their on choice and not anyone's elses business. That is what is wrong with the world today everyone is always in everyone elses business. "

" Take away the vote from all those who don't bother to vote and - guaranteed - they would ALL be up in arms complaining about not having the right to vote! Guaranteed! "

" I cannot believe that we have so many people in Kentucky that do not exercise their right to vote. We live in a country that you actually have this opportunity! It is a disgrace to see so many people not participate. Get out there and vote this May!! "
