March 3 through 7 is Newspapers in Education Week.

During this special week, we want to thank the corporate sponsors, Adopt-a-Class sponsors, subscribers who have made vacation donations and others who have contributed to the success of The Ledger Independent NIE program.

Because of you, more than 2,600 students in 17 different schools in our area have received newspapers to aid in their education. Students from second grade through high school have had a direct link to current events, both locally and nationally, through their local newspaper. They have also enjoyed laughing along with the serial story "Mr. Dogwood Goes to Washington," explored the life and times of President Harry Truman in "A Familiar Face," and increased their knowledge of African-American history with special reports during Black History Month. Their geography skills have improved with Pigskin Geography and science skills with NASA's Space Place for Kids.

The mission of The Ledger Independent NIE program is to improve reading and writing skills by supplying newspapers to the students.

The Ledger Independent is happy to offer these services and special editions such as the Voter's Guide last year which gave kids information on the voting process we incorporate in selecting leaders for our communities, our states and our nation.

Thanks again for sponsors which helped to distribute more than 65,000 newspapers to local students this year.

And a special thanks to The Ledger Independent NIE Coordinator Ginny B. Butler who has put countless hours and boundless energy into making the local program so successful.

" Jim, you know, you are correct. Why are we spending so much money on developmental courses at our public colleges if our public school systems are so great. Why are we having to RE-educate them on reading, writing and math? Maybe our colleges like EKU is doing, we should take a new look at how we are educating new teachers? Something is wrong. "

" How about actually having the teachers teach instead of spending all their time in custodial activites.
