MR. SHANNON

WHITTIER, Calif. -- Edfred L. Shannon Jr., leading Southland philanthropist and oil executive, of Whittier, died Sept. 21, 2008 at his hilltop home of congestive heart failure.
He was born in Druant, Okla., June 30, 1926, to the late Edfred L. and Oceon Merrill Shannon. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Lee Boggs, formerly of Germantown.
Ed and Ruth were married in August 1947, following Ed's service in the Army during which he was in the first battalion that was part of the occupation army that went ashore in Osaka, Japan in 1945. Following his military service, they settled in Oakland, Calif., and he attended UC Berkley where he received a degree in Petroleum Engineering.
He first worked for the Union Oil Company and then took a position with Santa Fe Drilling Company. The company became Santa Fe International and Ed became president at the age of 35 and later CEO and chairman for more than 30 years. Ed shepherded the small drilling company to a historic $2.5 billion sale to the Kuwaiti government in 1981.
Before retirement he served on boards such as Consolidated Freightways, Coca Cola Bottling Company of Los Angeles, Trust Company of the West, Southern California Edison, The Boy Scouts of America Los Angeles Council and a founding member of Nixon Library and birthplace foundation, Rose Hills Foundation and Autry National Center.
He is survived by three children, Michael and Kimberly Shannon, Kathy and Steve Johnson and Bruce and Kim Shannon; eight grandchildren, Chiara (Derek), Monica and Brendan Shannon, Martine, Kevin (Michele) and Bridget Johnson, and Robert Bruce and Melinda Shannon; two great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Maudie (Hal) Teegarden and Jeani McGee of Germantown, Opal B. Jett of Brooksville and Beryl Griffith of Winchester, Ohio.
A celebration of life service will be held Oct. 18, 2008, 11 a.m., at the Sky Rose Chapel, Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, Calif.
In memory of Ed and his late in-laws, Bruce and Ardella Boggs, the family has requested that memorials be sent to Ruggles Camp Ground, Box 173 Tollesboro, Ky. 41189.
