Former President Bill Clinton brought his wife, Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination to Maysville Tuesday, part of a swing through the commonwealth that also included stops in Paris and Morehead.

The president spoke at a campaign rally arranged by Sen. Clinton's Kentucky campaign chairman, Jerry Lundergan at the Mason County High School Fieldhouse, home of the state boys' basketball champion Mason County Royals. Organizers of the rally were perhaps hoping the team's winning tradition will translate into a win for the senator in Kentucky's May 20 primary. The team was introduced at the beginning of the rally and garnered cheers and applause from the crowd estimated at about 1,500.

Local political figures were on hand to get the crowd warmed up, including Maysville Mayor David Cartmell and Mason County Judge-Executive James L. "Buddy" Gallenstein, chairman of the county's Democratic party. Cartmell recounted the events which have kept Maysville in the news over the past week, including the premiere of George Clooney's movie, a visit by the U.S. Secretary of Education, Clinton's visit and the Royals run to the state basketball title.

"This is a week you will remember for the rest of your life," Cartmell said, directing many of his remarks to the younger people in the crowd. "This has been the best week, in the best town, in the best schools, in the best state."

With the Mason County High School band and concert choir called upon to provide music for the event, teenagers made up a large portion of those on hand for the rally. But area residents of all ages, from young mothers with babies in strollers to the elderly in wheelchairs also attended, not only to declare their support for Sen. Clinton but also to take advantage of the rare opportunity to get close to a former president.

The party faithful were on hand, many displaying homemade signs pledging their support to the former first lady in her quest for the White House.

Also taking the podium were Lundergan, former Gov. John Y. Brown, former state representative, gubernatorial candidate and current superdelegate Terry McBrayer, who called Sen. Clinton "a tough lady who knows how to get the job done."

Before Clinton was introduced, the loudest applause of the day was reserved for former Miss America and Maysville native Heather French Henry who has stumped for the senator across the country, including a trip to Texas before that state's crucial primary. It fell to Henry to introduce the president, who explained her motivation for supporting the senator's bid for the presidency.

"You may ask why your Miss America is reaching out for Hillary Clinton for president," she said.

Clinton, Henry said, has responded to her call for better health care and benefits for veterans, earning her trust and support.

"While others talk about the audacity to hope, she has the audacity to do," Henry said, who then introduced the man who had drawn hundreds of people to the Fieldhouse, former president Clinton.

Clinton gave his standard stump speech, urging voters to give his wife their support and outlining her plans for such issues as universal health care, the war in Iraq, education and the economy.

Clinton ended his speech by asking Kentuckians for both their votes and their financial support.

"Kentucky should say yes to Hillary Clinton," he said.

After leaving Maysville, Clinton made a brief stop in Flemingsburg where he chatted with about 400 Hillary Clinton supporters at the local Dairy Queen.

Kentucky Democrats will go to the polls on May 20.

" Coral that is why we need to vote for a True man in John McCain; true Obama is not the greatest, but at least he is alot better than the other one "Billary", she brags about being ready on day one, what experience does she bring, First Lady and a few years in the Senate, and then the only reason she got elected was the strong Republican drop out the last minute. Please get rid of the Clintons once and for all, Hillary the Presidency is not a entitlement to you. "

" When historians will go back over this 2008 presidential election it will come out as one of the biggest messes in our history. The charges of fraud overlooked in several states by Obama’s campaign on the caucuses, overlooked. Obama’s associates, over looked, Obama’s lies, Obama’s race baiting, overlooked, Obama’s light record in the Senate, overlooked, Obama’s past drug use, overlooked, Obama’s double standards, overlooked, Obama’s sexist remarks such as flirting with people on the campaign trail and calling women “sweetie” overlooked and this list goes on with the things that are being pushed under the rug and kept silent. The same is not true of Hillary, as every word, every look, every statement is torn apart and looked at under a microscope. Clearly the men have ganged up against Hillary and clearly she is the underdog in this race and has been battered to pieces by it. History will tell the tale and it will not be a pretty one. "

" You know, I had some hope for my old hometown. First, George Clooney, who is admirable not only for his movie making, but also for his humaniarian contributions, comes to Maysville. Then, I hear that Bill Clinton has decided to come to town. I thought for a moment, "Maybe Maysville isn't the conservative, close minded town I left behind." But then I read these comments. Thanks for being predictable, Maysville. Good luck, Clinton fans. You'll always be a minority in Maysville. "

" I agree with the comments reminding people that during Clinton's administration that several jobs did get sent overseas. Lots of layoffs. Also, I agree with the troop "non funding" during his term. Please think long & hard about who you vote for. I'm not sure when Heather Henry became an expert on politics either. But the comment about her needed to research Clinton support of veterans is definitely needed. "

" I am a woman voter who believes that a woman can be an effective president...but Not Hillary. She will decieve anyone to become the first woman president in this country. She is the type that will be requiring us to have the chip placed in our bodies for her so called "health care' Improvement...it has been mentioned in her past history by the way. I agree with Me...Huckabee should have been nominated...our country is on a fast downhill slide. "

Sandra wrote on Mar 27, 2008 1:48 PM:

" The clinton admin. had nothing but contempt for our military and did everything possible to deny funds for the military. For anyone to think hillary would do anything for the military is a person with no memory, no ties with reality or just someone playing politics. "ms.america" should do some serious reading and research. "

" The only integrity that Hillary has is to think that the Presidency is due her, a given for her(HOGWASH). She will say anything, be anything,or even cry to get votes. Why do people fall for this, we do not run a nation based upon polling data, we run a nation based upon convictions of our founding fathers, look at where we are today because we have strayed from that!! And as far as Hillary being for veterans, she show me how interest in us at DC meeting with the US Soldiers, I have eyewitness of the meeting, and she treated us like slop, do you hear me Former) Miss America !! Hillary is for her and Bill, saying look at me, don't be fooled Maysville.. "

" If Sandra is anything like me she wouldn't waste her energy to look out the window for even a glimpse let alone go to the rally for Clinton. He cared so much must be the reason why all our plants like Jockey were closed down and went off shore. Thanks for caring so much for this tiny place in this country and taking our jobs away! "

" people who speak badly about hillary simply just dont like the clintons. its called being a brainwashed republican. it along with half the things they believe are just made up lies. what amases me is that republicans actually believe if they say something enough itll be true. to bad we all live in actuality, not their reality. with that being said, the clintons are as corrupt as any other politian. altho the clintons could never be as bad as the bushs, to imply they are perfect is insanity "

Sandra wrote on Mar 26, 2008 4:13 PM:

" Never fear, I wouldn't walk across the street to see either clinton. They both should be in a Federal prison. "

Diana wrote on Mar 26, 2008 2:01 PM:

" So what integrity and ethics are in question here? The integrity with which Hillary worked to put her marriage back together and raise a wonderful daughter. The ethical way she fights for children's rights and their healthcare and future? OR the integrity of the current president to turn a blind eye to the problems of our nations deteriorating economy or the blind continuance of a war rivaling Vietnam? OR maybe the ethics of the other Democratic candidate who speaks in rhetorical terms while his closest advisors are in trouble with the law and asking God to damn America. GEE my vote's with Hillary. " Just was thrilled to see President Clinton and learn even more about our NEXT President!! He has written a wonderful book about what EVERYBODY can do to help - money or no money -- everyone should read it. I just wish we could have kept him or another 8 years as president -- and embrace the possibility of Hillary stepping in to help this country heal itself!! Thanks again for remembering the TINY places in this country!!! "

Sandra wrote on Mar 26, 2008 8:27 AM:

" After hillary clinton worked in secret on the biggest boondoggle in history with health care back in 94, I find it amusing anyone with a clear mind would think she would do any better now. Apparently integrity and ethics are not big issues with some people. Gee, wonder if hillary has had to dodge any sniper fire recently?? That Bosnia fantasy will haunt her for a long time. "
