Dr. Brown brings Mason County students a strong message
Thursday, October 16, 2008 12:38 AM EDT Print this story | Email this story
Dr. Adolph Brown brought dance moves, inspiration and questions to teachers and students at Mason County High School and Middle School during presentations on bullying, Wednesday at the Fieldhouse.

Brown hosted a separate presentation at Maysville Community and Technical College for Mason County teachers and district administrators.

"Life is a dance," said Brown as he spoke to teachers and students. "I came in as a speaker and I'm leaving as your friend."

His presentation included the dance moves of James Brown and Michael Jackson. Musical selections from Grease, KC and the Sunshine Band, Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer and Madonna played in a remix that also moved Brown to dance.

"I loved his dancing," said MCHS freshman Megan Woods.

But it wasn't just his dance moves that brought students and teachers to their feet following his presentation.

"When an educator calls you out on something it doesn't mean they're picking on you. It means they believe you have potential," Brown said to the assemblage of students.

Brown said his favorite part of the program was not during the event but when he returns home and receives e-mails from those who have attended his presentation.

"I love seeing true changes," Brown said. "Learning endures over time. Those are the things that make a difference. Education occurs out of change."

Brown said his presentation was "over the top" and after he finishes, he has nothing left.

"I leave nothing on the table. I may never have the opportunity to speak with them again," said Brown.

Brown spoke to the audience about his seven children. He painted a mental picture to the students in a way that invited each audience member to associate personality similarities with his family. Brown's real examples gave students and teachers something to identify with.

"Every 29 seconds we're losing a child in America's education system," said Brown. "I'm not going to lose you."

Brown has 15 years of experience as a tenured educator, administrator, business owner, psychotherapist, trainer and speaker.

MCHS freshman Sara Tolle said she enjoyed how Brown identified the subject, " The need to learn how to respect."

Mason County Guidance Councilor Kent Moore said, "I liked when he spoke about respecting all people even if you have adversities yourself. The whole message was strong."

Moore said he also enjoyed Brown speaking to the students about how they present themselves and the choices they make in how to carry themselves.

"He was very positive and upbeat. He embraced all of life," said Moore. "It was an important message. I was very impressed."

" Actually, Dr. Brown was funded by grant money within the school district and corporate sponsors in Maysville. Our community really pulls together and helps our school out in so many ways, so a big thanks to you all. Dr. Brown gave such a good message to the students about being a good character and respect for all. He was engaging, which can sometimes be hard to find when dealing with middle and high school studnents. I say way to go Mason County administration for bringing another great speaker to our great students. "

" Hey, I really enjoyed Dr. Browns visit, great speaker... But was it wortht he 15 to 20 thousand dollars spent to bring him in. read the school board report about the school buget being cut, and hard times are on the way. So spending this kind of money on a speaker, What was are school board thinking. A waste of our tax money. "
