GIRLS' SOCCER

MASON COUNTY 1, ST. PATRICK 0 - Jessica Batey scored with 23 minutes remaining to give Mason County a 1-0 win over St. Patrick in a 23rd District quarterfinal match Monday at Walton Verona.

It was the second time the teams met this year, with the Lady Royals winning both by the score of 1-0.

"(St. Patrick coach) Sally Parker does a great job and they have a very good team," said Mason County head coach Joe McKay. "It was an evenly matched game and it was nip and tuck the whole way."

Despite winning a district tournament game, McKay was more concerned with an off the field gesture by his opponent. When Mason County's bus broke down on the trip back, St. Patrick's team stopped and gave them a ride back to Maysville.

"As far as a display of character and class, this was one for the books," McKay said. "With all the stories of poor sportsmanship out there, this just puts things in perspective. I'm touched and I'm thankful to everyone with the St. Pat program."

The Lady Royals return to Walton-Verona for a semifinal match with Grant County on Wednesday.

GIRLS' MIDDLE SCHOOL BASKETBALL

MASON COUNTY 40, FLEMING COUNTY 12 - Mason County's seventh grade girls' basketball team finished its season with a 14-1 record by defeating visiting Fleming County 40-12 on Monday.

Mackenzie Butler led the way with 15 Points while Charnelle Brooks added 11.

CORRECTION - In Monday's paper, it was reported that Taylor Allen scored 35 points in three games as Mason County won an eighth grade girls' basketball tournament over the weekend at Lexington Catholic. Allen scored 45 points in the tournament.
