Strong Russell defensive unit blanks Lewis County, 34-0

VANCEBURG - Russell used a solid defense and a steady ground attack to coast to a 34-0 victory Friday night at Lewis County High School.
The Red Devils had five different backs rush for at least 40 yards, and four different backs found the end zone as they rolled up 318 yards on the ground. On the other side, Lewis County put together a promising opening drive marching 49 yards in nine plays to the Russell 26 before throwing an interception. Unfortunately for the Lions, the offense would have trouble finding the same rhythm and the opening series would account for nearly half of the team's 115 total yards.
“We were able to hold onto the football some, but we made some turnovers,” Lewis County head coach Josh Hughes told WKKS-FM following the game. “We didn't play particularly well and didn't get the big plays, but we were able to move it well at times so I wasn't completely disappointed.”
After the interception, the Lions would actually get a second chance when they forced a Russell fumble three plays later. However, the Lions went three-and-out and Russell went 78 yards in four plays with a 49-yard run by Will Rice setting up a six-yard touchdown scamper by David Bailey.
As the Lewis County offense remained stagnant, Russell scored on another four-play drive with another six-yard touchdown run, this time by Drew Abrams. Along with the touchdown came a piece of history as Red Devils senior kicker Jason Dolly, who tied a Kentucky record with his 74th consecutive extra point on the first touchdown, broke the record following Abrams' score. The new mark now stands at 76 after Dolly missed on a third quarter attempt.
The two scores would be more than enough for Russell as the biggest threat Lewis would pose after that point was a drive to the Red Devils' 31-yard-line before turning the ball over on downs just before the half. Russell would increase the margin by taking advantage of favorable field position from a partially blocked punt, allowing A.J. Cordle to hook up with Bailey on a seven-yard touchdown pass to cap a 29-yard drive and make the halftime score 21-0.
Russell had new faces in the backfield in the second half, but got similar results as Travis Jones scored on a 36-yard touchdown run and Jesse White added another from 22 yards out. Rice led Russell's balanced ground attack with an 82-yard performance while teammates Jones, Abrams, Bailey and White finished with 65, 63, 49 and 47 yards, respectively, while each scoring a touchdown.
Andy Downing led Lewis County on the ground with 49 yards while quarterback Caleb Enix passed for 46 yards.
Lewis County remains winless on the season at 0-6 and will host Fleming County (0-6) next week. Russell improves to 6-1 and ties Mason County atop the district at 3-0, setting up a showdown for the district championship in two weeks.
