Bittersweet Senior Night at Mason County

The Mason County boys and girls split a doubleheader with their counterparts from West Union on Senior Night for both teams Tuesday at Mason County High School.
In the first game of the night, the male Royals came up short in a comeback attempt and fell 3-2 to the Dragons and in the nightcap, the Lady Royals dominated from start to finish in downing the Lady Dragons 10-1.
West Union wasted no time getting started in the first game and got on the board in the 5th minute when Bryce Kramer was able to beat Mason County keeper Kyle Thompson with a shot to the net.
Meanwhile, the Royals also had some early opportunities but failed to convert and went down 2-0 in the 27th minute when West Union’s Joe Hankerson scored after his teammate’s shot went through Thompson’s legs. Hankerson followed the shot and squirted the ball into the net.
In the first half of the game, the Royals managed to get off nine shots compared to only five for the Dragons only to come up empty.
West Union quickly increased its lead four minutes after halftime on a shot by Christopher Armstrong after he got a nice lead pass from a teammate. As it turned out, that was the Dragons’ last goal of the game and it was barely enough because the Royals finally were able to generate some offense.
Mason County got its first goal and got back into the game in the 50th minute when senior Jackson Gossard beat the Dragons’ keeper Kaleb Griffin with a shot to the right side of the net. Seventeen minutes later, the Royals closed the gap even more on a goal by Tanner Walton after a nice assist from Zach Tompkins.
From that point on, the two teams went back and forth and West Union held on for its second victory of the season over the Royals. The first win came back on Sept. 22 and the score was also 3-2.
After the seniors from both teams were recognized between games, the Lady Royals came out firing and put their game away early by posting three first-half goals en route to the lopsided victory.
In the first half alone, Mason County fired off 27 shots compared to none for the Lady Dragons.
Senior Kristina Kassis led the way for the winners with three goals which resulted in the first hat trick of her career. In fact, all of the seniors who saw action for Mason County scored. The only one who didn’t was Alonna Greene, who didn’t play because of a knee injury.
If the Lady Dragons had any hopes of coming back in the second half, those hopes quickly vanished as the Royals, led by Kassis, scored five goals in the first 15 minutes of the half. All of Kassis’ scores came in that decisive half.
Seniors Jessica Batey, Taylor Sargent, Carolyn Morris and Chelsie Porter also got into the act after halftime with goals. Porter’s goal capped the scoring and served as a fitting sendoff because she is the Lady Royals’ regular keeper and rarely gets the chance to even attempt a goal.
The second-half goal by Batey was her second of the game as she also recorded one in the first half along with twin sister, Rebecca, and fellow senior Holly Moulis.
Samantha Voise scored West Union’s only score of the game in the 52nd minute.
Both the Royals and Lady Royals have one more regular-season game before beginning entering district play next week. The male Royals will host Covington Holy Cross today, and the girls will travel to Olive Hill to face West Carter on Thursday.
