MOUNT OLIVET -- The Deming Lady Devils volleyball team followed up Senior Night festivities on Monday with a 2-0 (25-13, 25-15) sweep over the Silver Grove Lady Trains.
Recognized before the game were the senior quartet of Kristen Graves, Jessica Hester, Katie Mitchell and Michelle Smith, and each have played key roles in the success of this season's 12-9 squad, according to head coach Ann Grause.
"These four girls have been with me for six years, beginning when they were in the seventh grade. I'm very proud of how far they have all come on the court and what fine young ladies they have become. One reason for that is they have good families, and the support I get from the parents here is unbelievable," Grause said. "Kristen was great tonight on the front line (five kills, two blocks) and she's got some hop. Jessica is always on and she had some awesome kills tonight, which always gets the crowd excited. Katie's been a tough server for us and she did a good job on the back row tonight as well. Michelle is always where she needs to be and she got some good tips tonight."
Grause wasn't pleased early in the opening set, calling an early timeout after watching her team fell behind the Lady Trains 3-1. The Lady Devils simply didn't appear to be focused and ready to play after the Senior Night hoopla.
But Hester came up with the first of her eight kills immediately following the timeout and Deming was energized.
An ace from junior Rebecca Stitt gave Deming its first lead at 6-5, and after Silver Grove's Cindy Miller tied the score with a kill, a long volley ended with another Hester kill, which began a 9-0 run for the home team. Included in the run were four aces served up by junior Mary Lauren Case, a Stitt kill and a hard, perfectly placed smash from Hester for her third kill.
Hester began the second set with a kill, but the game was close until an 8-3 Deming run, which included three consecutive Graves kills, stretched the lead to 15-9.
A pair of freshmen got into the act for Deming after the Lady Trains closed to within four points, when Jessica Mitchell's kill and Kelsey Carmack's ace again gave the Lady Devils their six-point advantage at 17-11.
Deming closed the evening with a 5-0 run, with Stitt coming up with a dig of an attempted Silver Grove kill, a pair of Hester kills and Case's two aces, giving her six on the evening.
Stitt finished the evening seven kills and an ace, and Smith contributed two kills and a pair of aces.
Deming closes out the regular season with a match at Montgomery County on Wednesday before returning to the Devil's Dome Monday for the 38th District tournament.
The Lady Devils will meet Harrison County in the opener at 7 p.m.
