Campbell County runs and throws for 492 yards in 49-28 win over Mason County

Junior mighty mite running back Austin Johnson led an impressive Campbell County rushing attack to a 49-28 win over Mason County on Friday evening in Alexandria. The quick and elusive 5-foot-5, 127-pounder ran for 242 of the Camels' 331 rushing yards on 25 carries.

Also starring offensively for the Class 6A school were junior quarterback Andrew Eshman and senior wideout Tony Bishop.

Eshman completed 12 of 14 pass attempts for 161 yards and three touchdowns, with Bishop on the receiving end of all three scores. Bishop caught six passes for 80 yards.

The Royals, a Class 3A school moving up in competition for the second time this season, got on the board first with an eight-play, 57-yard drive, capped off by the first of Jeremy Thompson's two touchdowns.

After forcing a Camels punt on the ensuing possession, the Royals committed the first of three costly turnovers, and Campbell County capitalized. Eshman tossed a perfect fade pass to Bishop in the end zone and the game was tied heading into the second quarter.

The home team asserted itself in the second period, with Grant Rose and Johnson each scoring on short runs to put the Camels in front by 14 points, before a Neal Pawsat to Terrence Breckenridge connection trimmed the lead to seven at the break. Breckenridge, who finished the game with 121 yards receiving on six receptions, scored on a 14-yard pass from Pawsat to make the score 21-14 at the half.

On the first drive of the second half, the Camels went 70 yards in eight plays, culminated by a Rose one-yard run, and the ensuing kickoff by Kyle Newman was a squib kick that went off a Mason County player and the ball was recovered by Campbell County.

The Camels turned the miscue into a quick score, a 20-yard scoring pass from Eshman to Bishop, and the score was 34-14 midway through the third quarter.

Mason County answered with a quick score of its own, going 66 yards on just three plays. Breckenridge caught a 43-yard pass from Pawsat on the first play of the drive, and Thompson scored from 10 yards out to trim the lead to 13, but Campbell County had an answer on its next possession. Rose ran for a six-yard score and a two-point conversion pass from Michael Kremer to Bishop made the score 42-21 late in the third.

The teams each scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter, with Bishop hauling in another 20-yard strike from Eshman, and Mason County's Bradley Lang scoring his first varsity touchdown on an eight-yard reception, capping off a 15-play, 85-yard drive for the Royals.

Mason County coach David Buchanan was disappointed with the loss when he spoke to WFTM-FM's Danny Weddle following the game.

"They kicked our tails," said Buchanan. "We're very disappointed with how we defended the run and how we played up front. I thought we'd do better but we have a lot of work to do. I still think we have a good football team, even as bad as we played defensively, but we didn't make the plays that would've kept us in the game tonight."

The Royals have an open date next week and return to action Oct. 17 with their homecoming game against Bourbon County.
