The John W. McNeill III Memorial Music Series welcomes the Kentucky Bach Choir as an addition to holiday festivities in the area.
The concert, featuring Johann Sebastian Bach’s Christmas Oratorio Parts III & IV, will be given at 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 2 at the First Presbyterian Church, 21 West Third Street in downtown Maysville. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students 18 and under and can only be purchased at the door on the night of the event.
“We are excited about bringing this outstanding chorus and orchestra to our town,” said Mike Thomas, chairman of the music series established in honor of the late John W. McNeill. “The group has a rich history of outstanding musicianship.”
Founded as the Lexington Bach Choir in 2007 by Richard Sowers, the mission of the choir is to perform the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and other master composers of like stature; presenting musical works through the single and combined talents of chorus and orchestra.
The Christmas Oratorio will feature 24 singers, six soloists, and 21 orchestra members.
“The First Presbyterian Church provides a perfect setting to experience the music,” Thomas said.
Marlon Hurst serves as the choir’s artistic director and has established professional performing opportunities with high artistic standards for exceptional singers and instrumentalists with the intent to share Bach’s music with the greater Commonwealth beyond the Bluegrass region.
To date, the Kentucky Bach Choir has performed concerts in Berea, Richmond, Danville, Paris, Frankfort, Williamsburg and Louisville, in addition to their regular performances in Lexington.
The John W. McNeill Memorial Music Series is sponsored and supported by the Hayswood Foundation and the Maysville Players.
