ABERDEEN, Ohio — All those elected into Aberdeen's Village Council Tuesday night agreed that, more than anything, they would need to work together for the common good and try to rise above the negativity that has dominated the council for so long.
"We need to put the people of the community first," said Jason Taft Phillips, who received the highest number of votes at 407.
Joining Phillips in the council seats will be Jerry Applegate, Jay Castle and Billie Eitel. Applegate received 281 votes, Castle 260 and Eitel 253, according to the Brown County Board of Elections Web posted results.
Former Councilman David Wireman and hopeful Greg Whicker received the lowest numbers of votes with 217 and 96, respectively.
"I wish I could tell you I was excited," said Eitel, who is currently serving on council. Eitel was selected to fill a vacancy that occurred when a council member resigned.
"I'm pleased and I'm glad the voters had enough confidence to put me in," Eitel said. However, she is disappointed that her good friend, Wireman, did not receive the votes needed to secure his place on council.
Wireman did not echo the melancholy Eitel was feeling.
"I am fine," he said. "They're all good people. I wish them the best."
Eitel and Castle were both at Wireman's house waiting for election results. Castle said he was shocked Wireman was not one of the top four.
Castle, who served 19 years on the Ripley Union Lewis Huntington School Board, said he had intended to run again for the school board following his resignation in January. He resigned only because he had begun classes at the University of Cincinnati and did not think he would have the time necessary to devote to his position. However, he found his course load lighter than expected.
Castle changed directions after attending a council meeting and witnessing the negativity firsthand. He said he hopes council will not fight as much in the future, but will work towards progress.
Applegate was at Dairy Yum Yum waiting results Tuesday evening and said he appreciates the confidence shown in him.
Applegate ran for mayor two years ago but lost. He said he approached his campaign this time with an open mind. His agenda now is to advance the people's agenda.
A message left on Whicker's cell phone was not returned as of press time.
Water options, including a treatment plan or purchasing from other sources, is a top consideration for the newly elected council members.
Also of concern are roads, sidewalks and the aging infrastructure of the village.
Phillips, whose uncle, Terry Phillips' term on the council ends with the new year, said change is needed in the village.
Phillips, Applegate and Castle will join Eitel, Hugh Hall and Robert Hutchison on the council. In addition to Terry Phillips, Councilmen Peter Chamness and R.V. Blankenbickler did not file for re-election.
"Can't wait to get started," Jason Phillips said.
Voter turnout for Brown County was about 29.5 percent, according to the Brown County Board of Election's Web site. Of the 28,725 registered voters, 8,457 turned out at the polls.
