A young man from Maysville was nominated by Congressman Geoff Davis to attend both the United States Military Academy at West Point and the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

Cody Keef, a senior at Mason County High School, was one of 22 students nominated out of the Fourth District, for admittance into a United States service academy.

Members of Congress have the ability to nominate students to attend the Air Force, Merchant Marine, Military and/or Naval academies.

"I am pleased to nominate these students to the service academies," said Davis. "As a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, I understand how each of these schools shape and educate young men and women to become leaders not only in the military but in our nation's business and government communities as well."

Davis was a 1981 West Point graduate. He enlisted in the Army immediately following high school. In a rare appointment, Davis was chosen from enlisted ranks to attend the academy.

Fourth District students were selected by an appointed seven-person committee comprised of former military personnel, service academy graduates, businessmen, parents of service academy graduates and a guidance counselor to interview potential nominees.

Nominees were chosen based on personal merit. The nominee must exhibit: evidence of character, leadership, academic excellence, physical aptitude and involvement in extracurricular activities, said the congressman.

In addition to the nomination, students are expected to complete an application process to each academy. Keef expects to hear back from the Naval Academy and West Point by spring.
