Participation in computer classes aimed at helping adults become more computer-savvy in their job search has waned at Mason County Public Library, despite increasing unemployment rates.
Initial interest in the grant-funded classes kept classes near full. However, the numbers have winnowed out with time.
"People have short memories," said Valerie Zempter, director of the library. "We're doing our best to get the word out."
The library received a $5,500 programming grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services. The grant is administered by the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives.
Mason County was one of 26 to apply through the KDLA for the federal grant, 10 were awarded totalling more than $55,000.
The series of classes is titled "Web Workshops for Job Seekers" and offers assistance with basic computer skills such as file management, saving and editing documents and printing. In one class people will learn to create and print a resume, in another they will establish an email account and learn how to use it.
According to a press release, the workshops will also "offer instruction on submitting internet applications to potential employers, government agencies, educational institutions and other organizations."
The grant funds were eligible for use to provide supplies, publicity and instructor's fees.
Russell Dickson, who has volunteered for the library in the past, is the instructor for the classes. The library also collaborated with Licking Valley CAP to offer additional professional development classes. Denise Walker, a professional development assistant with Licking Valley, offers courses on interview do and don'ts after certain computer classes.
Zempter said the library applied for the grant because library officials felt a pressing need to help people make the most of their Internet experience.
A previous grant application for a mobile computer lab failed, though the library still managed to purchase the laptop lab and use it for workshops.
The November schedule of classes is:
