Rodney Baker has been named publisher of The Ledger Independent.

The announcement came down Friday from Lee Enterprises, parent company of the newspaper and a major provider of local news, information, and advertising.

“Rod is an experienced digital and print advertising leader with more than 19 years in the newspaper industry,” said Lee Tier Three Group Publisher Cathy Hughes. “He brings not only that experience but, as a resident of the area, he also has a clear understanding of the market and its opportunities. We look forward to Rod joining Lee Enterprises as Maysville publisher."

"Let me say how humbled I am to be working beside each of you," Baker said to his management team on Friday. "Walking in the footsteps of Cathy's leadership over the past year and in Bob Hendrickson's for the 25 years prior to that is a bit surreal for me. It's an honor I don't take lightly."

Baker was a national account executive with Valassis since 2015. He joined Gannett’s Enquirer Media in Cincinnati, in 1998 and served in several leadership roles before being named senior advertising manager for Automotive in 2008.

He and his wife, attorney Delores Woods Baker, make their home in Maysville where she also practices law.

Baker said the newspaper industry is changing and The Ledger Independent will continue to change along with it.

"We are changing and adapting with the times," he said. "As we adapt to the times, I don't believe that we can underestimate the role that we play in the lives of our readers and more importantly, the role we play in our community. We are the leading source for local news and information in the seven-county area we serve. People count on us. Businesses count on us. Our community counts on us."

Baker was a 2017 member of the Leadership Horizons Board of Directors and a six-time recipient of the Pinnacle Leader Award presented by Enquirer Media. He was a 2016 finalist for Valassis Best of National Sales award.

He attended Northern Kentucky University where he studied business management.
