VANCEBURG| The Lewis County Cancer Coalition is asking for area businesses and residents to participate in the annual "Paint Lewis County Pink".
Anita Gilbert, a member of the coalition, said the idea came last year after Scioto County, Ohio did a similar gesture for breast cancer awareness month. "We thought it would be a good way to get creative while also showing awareness for breast cancer," she said.
Gilbert said last year they had some interesting decorations, such as a pink pumpkin. "Some people put up signs, but something you don't see too often is a pink pumpkin," she added.
The decorating is done as part of a contest where the best decorations get trophies, but it's not all about the competition. "No one has to participate in the contest," said Gilbert. "But we would like people to show their support by participating anyway and send us their photos. Participants can designate on their photos whether it is for competition or not. We just want to see as much pink as possible."
In order to participate in the event, businesses and residents must decorate the visible areas of their homes or buildings with pink items or signs by Oct. 15. Pictures can be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org or Paint Lewis County Pink, P.O. Box 219, Vanceburg, Ky 41179.
