Maysville City Commission approved a measure Thursday that drops restrictive residency requirements for police, firefighters, and city department heads.

The ordinance deletes an outdated ordinance requiring that some employees live within 10 nautical miles of city hall which was a holdover from years ago, Mayor David Cartmell explained.

The issue passed with Commissioner Victor McKay casting the lone dissenting vote.

Commissioners also gave the go-ahead to a resolution authorizing the transfer of property on Forest Avenue as a donation from Freddy Riggs. The property was the site of a dilapidated warehouse and the city plans to turn it into a park.

In September, the Department for Local Government awarded $75,000 from the Land Water Conservation Fund for the construction of the park. The award is a matching funds grant, meaning the city can provide part of its share through in-kind labor and property value, officials said.

Plans for the park include a basketball court, walking track, benches, a gazebo and, at some point an amphitheater.

In other business during the special meeting, commissioners approved redesignating the Renaissance Board to Main Street. A slot on the board for the Entrepreneurial Center was switched to an at-large spot.
