BROOKSVILLE -- Kathy and Steve Free have been named grand marshals of the Brooksville Christmas parade.
The Christmas parade will begin at 1 p.m., Saturday with parade lineup beginning at noon at Taylor Elementary School. A grand marshal reception will be held at noon at the Haley House Museum.
Kathy and Steve Free are natives of Brooksville.
Kathy Free graduated from Bracken County High School before going on to the Maysville Vocational Secretarial program.
"I was hired as a secretary there before I even finished the class," she said.
During her time as a secretary for the program, she began working as a secretary for the Hayswood Hospital LPN nursing program.
From there, she worked at a grocery store in Brooksville for three years before being hired to work at the Bracken County Clerk's Office.
"I became the deputy clerk and worked there for 24 years," she said. "I ran for the circuit clerk position and retired from my job in June."
According to Kathy Free, over the last several years, her husband, Steve Free has worked as a tobacco farmer, goat farmer and now a cattle farmer. He also retired from East Kentucky Power in 2008.
"We had goats for many years," she said. "Now, we have cattle."
Kathy Free said she was informed about the decision to make them grand marshals around the beginning of November.
"I was shocked," she said. "We were honestly speechless. It's an honor and I'm thrilled they chose us."
According to Kathy Free, one of the reasons she believes they were chosen as grand marshals is their work with the Santa Lane in Brooksville.
"We have several rooms where children can watch movies, make reindeer food and complete other activities," she said. "They get to meet Santa."

At 9 a.m., there will be a brunch at the Brooksville Christian Church fellowship hall, Santa Claus Lane will be opened from 9 a.m. to noon and again after the parade.
