There is a war memorial situated on the lawn of the Mason County Courthouse in Maysville listing the names of veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice during times of war.
The granite Jaycee War Memorial is inscribed with the following quote from Abraham Lincoln, given during his Gettysburg Address: "That we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain."
The monument was dedicated May 30, 1971, by Brig. General George S. Patton Jr., who flew by helicopter from Fort Knox for the ceremony.
For more than 40 years the monument has stood vigil over the courthouse lawn.
On its south face, the names of those from Mason County in uniform killed during World War I and World War II are listed. On the north face, those lost from our community in World War II are continued, along with names of men (no women are among those listed) who died for our nation in Korea and Vietnam are inscribed in stone.
