With only one fall sports team remaining in The Ledger Independent coverage area, this edition of the Players of the Week will be the last until the winter season rolls around.
For the final fall edition, Bracken County’s Griffin Appleman and Mason County’s Alyssa Bisotti earned Players of the Week honors, while the Bracken County football team earned the Performance of the Week.
Bisotti was the top coverage area finisher at the KHSAA state cross country meets at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington on Saturday. Bisotti led the Lady Royals, who finished 10th as a team, by finishing 53rd individually in the Class 2A girls’ race with a time of 21:32.
The Polar Bears claimed Performance of the Week honors by picking up their first football playoff win in school history with a 36-6 victory over Fairview on Friday. Bracken County fell to the Eagles at home in the first round of the Class A playoffs a season ago, and weren’t about to let it happen again. They jumped out to a 16-0 lead after a 16-yard touchdown run from Tad Fisher and a 3-yard run from Trey Brausch.
And then the male Player of the Week got going.
After the “Bear Down Defense” forced Fairview to turn the ball over on downs on the Bracken County 7-yard line, Appleman spun away from several tackles to break free for a 93-yard touchdown run. Appleman added a 47-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter to cap off the first round victory. The senior finished with 238 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries. He also led the team with eight total tackles.
Appleman and the Polar Bears return to action on Friday for a second round game in Paintsville. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
