An unseasonably warm week filled the air for local competition as the fall sports season continues to roll along.
In this week's edition of Players of the Week for the prior week, a Mason County running back and a West Union girls' golfer earned recognition for their performances.
Royals running back Malkolm Devine tied a school record with returning the opening kickoff 90 yards against Scott in a tough 27-21 loss in overtime. Devine wasn't done there as he ran for a hard earned 164 yards on 28 carries with a touchdown. Devine totaled 262 all-purpose yards in the contest as he tried to will his team to victory. The 164 yards on the ground was a season high for the senior as he's cleared the 100-yard marker twice this season.
Lady Dragons golfer DeAnna Caraway ran away with the girls' Southern Hills Athletic Conference individual golf title. Caraway fired a two-day score of 85, topping the field and teammate Lindsey Daniel by four strokes. Caraway and West Union walked away with the team SHAC title, topping second place Eastern by 52 strokes.
As for Performance of the Week, the West Union boys' golf team earned their second straight team SHAC title last Thursday. Elijah McCarty, last week's Player of the Week, also won his second straight individual SHAC title. The Dragons topped the field by 10 strokes with a team score of 667, beating out second place North Adams. McCarty beat the field by 11 strokes with a four-day score of 147.
