The stars on each team are shining as fall sports have hit the home stretch.
The athletes that put together the best games last week were Manchester’s Nick Woolard and Mason County’s Danielle Heflin, while the Mason County girls’ soccer team closed out the regular season in impressive fashion to capture the performance of the week.
The Lady Royals won both games they played last week, beating Calvary Christian on Monday, 5-0, and Greenup County on Tuesday, 8-0. The win against the Lady Musketeers was the third straight to close out the regular season. In those three contests, the Lady Royals outscored opponents, 22-1.
Heflin, who is no stranger to stuffing the stat sheet, led Mason County in those victories. The senior striker scored four goals in the win against Calvary Christian, while adding five more against Greenup County. She finished with 34 goals in the regular season, moving her to 95 goals in her career entering her final high school postseason.
Woolard went off for three touchdowns in the Greyhounds’ 40-8 victory against Green on Friday night. It was the team’s second straight win and third of the season, an improvement from a one-win 2016 campaign. The senior got his scoring started on a 39-yard pass from quarterback Shaun Gould to give Manchester a 14-0 lead, then added a 2-yard run with 10.9 seconds left in the first half for the 27-0 advantage. He kept rolling into the third quarter, scoring on the first play of the frame with a 54-yard run.
