CARLISLE | Ryan Gallenstein gave a gallant effort, but the 6-foot-3 senior's 22-point second-half performance was not enough for St. Patrick to beat Model in the championship game of Saturday's Bluegrass Conference Showcase.

The Saints trailed by 12 points with 5:44 to play and then nine with 2:26 left on the clock before tying the score with 12 seconds remaining. However, a foul with 0.7 seconds to play put A.J. Hammons on the line and the Patriot junior sank both free throws to give Model an 82-80 victory.

"I wasn't happy with our effort in the first half. I thought we got lackadaisical, especially in the second quarter," St. Patrick coach Andy Arn said. "But, I thought we really did a good job getting back into it in the second half. I thought Ryan took charge and Cory (Jodrey) stepped up too."

The Patriots started the second period on a 14-2 run to take a 35-20 lead with 3:15 to play in the first half. Hammons sent his team into halftime with a 41-28 advantage after scoring on an offensive rebound with 26 seconds to play.

Model's lead swelled to 13 points a minute and a half into the third quarter, but Taylor Slack helped St. Patrick close to within six at 52-46 with 1:38 remaining on the clock.

The Patriots answered with a 6-0 run over the next minute and eight seconds, but Slack's 3-pointer with just under 12 seconds to play cut the margin to nine at end of the period.

Gallenstein (13 points), Jodrey (10 points) and Forrest Keating (six points) did most of the scoring in the final quarter as the Saints crept back into the game. A 7-0 run drew St. Patrick within five with 3:08 to play, but Model hit 6-of-8 free throws over the next 42 seconds to push its lead back to nine at 76-67.

Jodrey then went on a tear, scoring on back-to-back layups and then knocking down a 3-pointer in the next minute to close the margin to 78-76 with 1:16 left on the clock.

Hammons knocked down a pair of free throws on the Patriots' next trip down the floor, but a Keating layup returned the deficit to two with 33 seconds remaining.

Brendon Hill missed a pair of foul shots with 25.4 seconds left in the contest and Slack tied the score at 80-80 with a layup off a Gallenstein assist with 12 seconds to play.

On the next trip down the floor, Hammons drove the lane and was fouled, sinking the game-winning free throws with less than a second still on the clock.

After a time out, St. Patrick inbounded the ball under the Model basket and Gallenstein caught a three-quarters' court pass, but Anthony Gerald jarred the ball loose as Gallenstein went up for the final shot.

Gallenstein finished with 31 points, eight rebounds and five blocks. Jodrey added 22 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and three steals.
