For 29 years at every home basketball game in the venerable Maysville High School gym, the Dogs had the best sixth man in the state.
John K. Farris demanded excellence in his students, even when they were playing a home game and I remind you they were dressed in full band uniform.
The band was so loud in the Maysville gym, that the opposing team's coach could not even give instructions to his squad. From the moment the band struck up the school song, The Grand Old School, his band had the gym rocking. I remember the state tourney in Freedom Hall in 1972, as his MHS band had the whole complex in awe. The bands from the 15 other schools sounded like a kazoo band in the giant arena.
When the Maysville band started playing the Theme from Shaft, the Freedom Hall crowd could not believe how loud and awesome they were. It got the crowd behind the Dogs and they pulled off one of the biggest upsets in state tourney history as they beat Louisville Central.
The answer to last week’s question was that Mike Reid, the former Bengal, earned a Grammy after his playing days.
I had many correct answers but the first were; Ronnie Berryman, Chuck Hamilton, Tom Sims along with Peggy Frame, Andrew Crosby and Pamela Bryan.
Let’s keep the Bengals questions in honor of their 50th season. What former WWF pro wrestler played for the Bengals during the strike games of 1987?
Last week's picks: 14-6, (YTD: 95-22, 81%)
This week's picks:
Clemson over Syracuse: Orange will be on display on this game, but I take the Clemson Tiger’s orange.
Washington State over California: I believe in Coach Mike Leach’s team after the past few weeks.
Wisconsin over Purdue: The Boilermakers are improving every week, but not enough to beat the Badgers.
West Virginia over Texas Tech: I take the Mountaineers in a wild shootout by three.
Louisville over Boston College: The Cards have lost their swagger but will have enough to win this game.
Iowa State over Kansas: Iowa State is still on a high after last week’s huge upset win.
Western Kentucky over UNC Charlotte: The Toppers are still not clicking on offense, but will win this game by nine.
Vanderbilt over Mississippi: I pick the Dores to pull off the upset in Oxford.
Ohio State over Nebraska: The offense of the Buckeyes is something to admire as they win this game by 20.
Oklahoma over Texas: The Sooners were shocked last week, but they will beat Texas by four.
Alabama over Arkansas: They say when you wrestle with a hog you get muddy too, but the Tide will stay clean.
Georgia over Missouri: The Tigers are in for a long day as the Dogs can name the final score.
Tennessee over South Carolina: The Vols will finally send the fans home happy on Rocky Top.
Auburn over LSU: The Tigers of Auburn will beat the Tigers of the Bayou by three.
Florida over Texas A&M: The Gators are reeling from last week’s loss but they will beat the Aggies.
South Florida over Cincinnati: The Bearcats simply do not have enough to win this game versus the Bulls.
San Diego over Morehead State: I still cannot figure out why a team from California is in the Pioneer League.
Minnesota over Michigan State: My upset pick of the week as the Gophers pull off the upset.
Stanford over Oregon: The Ducks simply have trouble scoring, so I pick the Cardinal.
Oklahoma State over Baylor: The Cowboys will score over 55 points in this game.
