COLUMBUS - West Union’s Elijah McCarty capped off a strong senior golf season at the OHSAA Boys’ Division III State Tournament over the weekend.
McCarty shot a two-day 167, finishing 31st individually at 23-over on the Ohio State University Scarlet Course.
The West Union senior shot a 12-over 84 during the first round on Friday to put himself in a tie for 31st, and followed it up on Saturday with an 11-over 83.
McCarty was the medalist for all four rounds of the Southern Hills Athletic Conference Tournament and finished with a four-day 147, 11 strokes better than Noah Lung of North Adams, who finished second.
He finished in a tie for second at the Southeast Division III Sectional Tournament at Shawnee State Park Golf Course on Sept. 27. The Dragons finished second as a team, earning a place in the district tournament on Oct. 2 at Elks Country Club. McCarty advanced to the state tournament by firing a 72 that day, winning by two strokes.
Columbiana’s Jared Wilson was crowned OHSAA Division III state champion by finishing the tournament at 3-under. Worthington Christian was the top team, shooting a 623 for the 17-stroke victory.
