In my humble opinion, the list of Kentucky High School coaches who excelled in coaching two sports is short, but Woodie Crum belongs on that list.
Coach Crum started out coaching basketball in our area with the Mays Lick Cardinals. He then became an assistant basketball coach for Earle D. Jones at Maysville High. Woodie then became the head basketball coach at Maysville after Jones retired.
Coach Crum led the Bulldogs to three 10th Region championships in his nine years at the helm for the Dogs. As the head baseball coach, he managed the Bulldogs to the state baseball title in 1958. He also took the Harrison County Thorobreds to the state basketball tourney in 1976.
Check out these stats from Coach Crum’s basketball and baseball coaching history: in Kentucky High School basketball, he won 527 games and in baseball he won over 250 games in 10 years.
The answer to last week’s trivia question was that Bill Arnsparger was the Paris High grad who later became a NFL and LSU coach. The first to answer were David Buchanan, Jean Everett, Terry Fryman along with Tom Sims, Sally Baxter and Ronnie Berryman.
This week's question: Morehead State cheerleaders have numerous National Championships, but another sport at Morehead has captured four national championships. What sport is it?
Last week's picks: 18-2 (YTD: 125-32, 80%)
This week's picks:
South Carolina over Vanderbilt: The Gamecocks are playing better the past few games.
Louisville over Wake Forest: The Cards offense came to life last week and it will stay awake in this game.
Clemson over Georgia Tech: The first game since the big upset loss, the Tigers will be ready.
Virginia Tech over Duke: The Hokies will struggle in the first half and then they will turn it on.
Kansas State over Kansas: The Wildcats can name the final score.
Notre Dame over North Carolina State: The Irish will beat a good Wolfpack squad as they battle for a playoff spot.
Washington over UCLA: This will be a high scoring game, but I take the Huskies.
Texas over Baylor: The Longhorns have been playing hard the past few weeks, they get a W this week.
Georgia over Florida: The Bulldogs are good, but you never know in a big rival game, but I take the Dogs.
Florida Atlantic over Western Kentucky: The Toppers have been playing with fire the past few weeks, they get burnt in this one.
Ohio State over Penn State: The game of the week and I pick the Buckeyes by six.
Kentucky over Tennessee: If the Vols lose this one, Coach Butch Jones will have to hitchhike down I-75.
Oklahoma over Texas Tech: The Sooners have not been playing well, but they have enough to win this one.
Texas A&M over Mississippi State: This one will be tight, but I pick the Aggies by three.
Valparaiso over Morehead State: The Eagles travel up north, but they lose a close one.
Northwestern over Michigan State: My upset pick of the week as the Wildcats pull off the stunner.
Michigan over Rutgers: The Maize and Blue get back in the win column.
Toledo over Ball State: The Rockets can flat out score as they win this game in Muncie.
Memphis over Tulane: The Tigers never give up as they came back big time last week versus Houston.
Miami (Fla) over North Carolina: The Canes are rolling and winning the tight games, but this will not be tight.
