The 2017 portion of the basketball season came to a close last week with plenty of players finishing out the year with a bang.
Bracken County’s Kinley Ruf stood out on the girls’ side, while Ripley’s Ryan Harney earned Player of the Week honors on the boys’ side. The Augusta Panthers finished out the year strong to claim the team Performance of the Week.
Ruf traveled to Frankfort for Christmas at the Capital and averaged 20.3 points and seven rebounds per game as the Lady Bears went 1-2. The senior had 21 points and six rebounds in a 49-48 loss to Brown on Wednesday, 15 points and eight rebounds in a 50-35 win over Atherton on Thursday and had 25 points and seven rebounds in a 60-49 loss to Frankfort on Friday. Ruf is now averaging a team-high 11 points per game and grabs 5.2 rebounds per game.
Ripley’s fast start continued last week with the help of Harney, who averaged 16.5 points game and 10.5 rebounds in two games. The senior had 15 points and seven rebounds in a 55-42 win over New Richmond on Friday and added 18 points and 14 rebounds in a 66-60 win over Mariemont on Saturday. He led the way with nine points and 6.5 rebounds per game during the team’s 7-1 start.
Augusta ventured across the Ohio River to close out the year at the Ripley Holiday Classic. The Panthers went 2-0 to snap a three-game skid. Augusta opened with Felicity-Franklin on Friday, overcoming illness and a 22-15 halftime deficit to come away with a 43-34 win. Cody Ripato led the way with 13 points, while Preston Philpot had 10 and Stephen Cordle and Austin Eichenberger added seven apiece. The Panthers avoided overtime to come away with a 56-54 win against New Richmond the next day when Eichenberger found Cordle for a layup at the final buzzer. Augusta moved to 6-6 with the win.
